If you opened the window and listened closely Sunday night, you could hear it: the sound of millions of remote controls changing the channel during the 2021 Oscars.
And after last night’s debacle — the worst Academy Awards of my lifetime — they may never return.
Producer Steven Soderbergh, the man who directed “Traffic” and “Erin Brokovich,” among many other fine films, helmed the broadcast and was determined to make it more intimate and cinematic than usual. Alright, as movie critic, I’ll play ball.
“Steven Soderbergh’s The Oscars” gets 1 star. The night was nearly non-stop drudgery, zero humor and a format that tried even the most resolute of attention spans.
Too bad. The ceremony started out promisingly. Presenter Regina King confidently strutted through Los Angeles’ Union Station, which was reconfigured to host the event, like it was a catwalk during Fashion Week. And she arrived to a neat art deco-looking banquet hall where the trophies would be handed out. Cool, new, fun!
Yeah, for a good 90 seconds. While the retro set suggested a classic Dean Martin roast, we got a kindergarten graduation ceremony instead.

I watched 5 of the 7 Best Picture nominees and only one of them managed to even keep me awake. The rest were boring, depressing or both. A perfect summary of today's Hollywood and it's bound to get worse once their diversity rules kick in.
Money drives the entertainment industry and things won't change until enough people refuse to pay money to be insulted.
Which 5 did you watch?
I for one am happy Korean filmmaking is getting mainstream acclaim.
And Chinese-born Chloe Zhao of Nomadland fame is keen on portraying forgotten souls of America. Like South Dakotan cowboy in “The Rider.”
Just remember when people watch those mega-blockbuster Action Movies, those are what subsidizes this crap.
why are you watching any of it?
I have lived without television completely for almost 20 years. I’m not missing much. you’ll get over hollywood and sports pretty quickly too
I always joked about this, but... honestly, I would pay to miss the Oscars.
I blame the viewer. What did they expect?
The Rider is a great film.
I haven’t watched ego-based, commie, celebrity trash in years nor have I gone to a movie theater in 20 years.
Same here - 12 years without TV and I spend more time reading, exercising and experiencing life
The last time I watched the Oscars, or any awards show, was sometime in the ‘70s.
Long before their politics bothered me they bored me to death.
Actually I watched 6:
1. Nomadland: While you could feel sorry for the circumstances that led to these people living the lives they were living, once they made up their minds it was their problem. Frances McDormand's character passed up several chances at a happy ending for one of solitude and loneliness. So why exactly were we supposed to care about her or this boring movie?
2. Minari: They started out with a story, then the movie ended. Do they stay together? Do they save the farm? Do they turn into a Minari farm because nobody likes their vegetables? Will there be a chapter 2? If there is I won't waste my time watching it like I wasted my time watching this one.
3. The Father: If you ever need proof that great acting does not a great movie make, this is the film for you. In order to really appreciate this movie you would have to watch it twice - once to figure out what the heck is going on then again to focus on the performances. Only it's too boring for that.
4. Sound of Metal: Was this movie supposed to be inspirational? Well it wasn't. It's about a guy who loses his hearing, gets in with a deaf community that had some nice people in it, abandons them because he wants to get back on tour then gets upset because his implants have terrible sound quality. It could have been a good story. Instead it was another waste of time.
5. Mank: Some drunk has flashbacks about people he liked and decided to trash instead. Supposed to be cool and into the period because it was filmed in black and white. The only thing interesting about it was that it highlighted the rise of Netflix and the fall of the big studios.
6. Promising Young Woman: A tortured soul with good looks and a killer body spends her nights pretending to be drunk so men will pick her up, take her home, try to take advantage of her stupor but then, at the last second, she sobers up and gives them a stern lecture. Apparently she fills a notebook with conquests without one of these men beating her to a pulp, raping her or tossing her out to the street with a laugh. Yes, it really is that stupid but at least it kept me entertained for a few minutes, a sad commentary on a sad sack year for movies.
I had less than zero interest in Black Judas or the Chicago 7. I get all of my movies for free and even at that price they weren't worth watching.
I only clicked on this thread to say there is nothing I care less about than the Oscars. Hollywood is dead to me. Has been for years. There are enough good movies made in years gone past that I haven’t seen or would like to see again to last me the rest of my time on earth, however long the good Lord wants that to be.
I have been without TV now for about 8 years and have learned to live without it. The last time I saw the oscars was 25 years ago to make a girl I was seeing happy and even then I felt the need to wear a pink tu-tu.
I hear ya. . . .I’m working on 7 years of no TV. I really am clueless with the Who’s Who of Hollywood except for what I read on FR. . . and sports. . .well I live the memory of my brother’s basketball days. . . and he is a senior citizen now.
I have rarely even kept up with some preachers I’d watch from time-to-time, in the past 12+ months.
Just too much going on.
I didn’t realize that film making was an essential business. How were movies even made with the lock downs.? Unless they were all filmed in FL,
This is a first. I
A) Didn’t know it was on
B) Didn’t even hear of most the best picture nominees
The last time I watched - and enjoyed - a full Oscar telecast, Bob Hope was the host.
I’ve been binge watching Asian romcoms lately.
Some are extremely funny with lots of subtle romance thrown in. Perfectly acceptable family fare with clean language and situational comedy.
Hollyweird is toxic.
