Devastating Drought: Texas Farmers Say 2021 Drought Already Rivals 2011

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows from North Dakota to Texas, all the way west to California, the most severe levels of drought didn’t ease across the U.S. this past week.

While 62% of the country is seeing some level of dryness, a 2-point improvement in a week, the most extreme level of drought grew, now covering more than 9% of the country.

Texas Extremes

All levels of drought are painted across the Texas U.S. Drought monitor. Only 8% of the state is drought-free, with 8.5% in the exceptional drought category. Around one-quarter of the state is seeing extreme drought conditions.

West Texas farmers are preparing themselves for a possible devastating impact to the 2021 crop.

“We're extremely dry,” says Blake Fennell, a farmer in Earth, Texas. “I would say we're giving 2011 a run for its money, but we're probably drier than 2011 at this point.”

2011 is a year that sticks in many farmers minds in the West Texas and Texas Panhandle area. That’s when consecutive days of 100-degree temperatures, with no rainfall, meant pivots couldn’t even make it a full circle without crops shriveling up. And the dryland crop was nil.

Too Dry to Plant

The West Texas farmer says his area hasn’t’ seen significant rain fall in nearly two years.

“We've still got to give that crop every chance we think we can get, but at the same time, we also can't waste a lot of money on a crop that we don't think we're going to have going into it,” he says.

These folks need to build canals all over the place to retain some of this water. We need some engineers thinking outside the box.

The old USSR had about 55 years of annual drought. Started right after the communist party took over the agricultural system.

I can only speak to my county in north central Texas. In 2020 for the year we had above normal rain but it was front in loaded with the 4Q getting about 1/3 of normal. The first four months of 2021 we are at normal (slightly above actually). We’re listed as D2 drought. Just not sure that compares to what has actually happened.

The article was written before 4/15.

I’ve received about 5 inches of rain at my house in DFW since 4/15.

The Scaremougering “Drought” shit has to stop. Its called Texas weather.

We get a ton of rain, then it doesn’t rain. Rinse. Repeat.

On Monday, the forecast for Friday was a 0% chance of rain. It rained all Friday. Nobody has ANY idea what will happen 2 weeks from now as far as precipitation is concerned. Not one person.

Drought in Houston is torrential rains every three days, instead of every other day.

The panhandle and south plains of Texas are still bone dry as of May 1st. Time is running out for those farmers to have a crop this year.

West of the 100 Meridian isn’t reliably farmable without irrigation. That is the way it has been for at least the last 800 years.

Some years are going to suck. Its called “The Climate of the US”.

Eh, it’s been wet and rainy in Texas for weeks.

Every weekend I’m finding my planned outings canceled.

Even this weekend.

And rainy during the week as well which impacts my commute

>That’s when consecutive days of 100-degree temperatures

How many connecutive days of 100 degree temps so far this year?

Been colder later into the year

Could be a more active hurricane season (strength not numbers)
