What really struck me was the concept he mentioned where, as he drove around on a motorcycle with his buddy, he saw all of these structures built that had a second story started, but...never finished.
Apparently, there is some kind of building code which renders some kind of financial advantage for building two story buildings so they build them like that with a second story started, but never finish them.
There does seem to be something odd about that culture with those kinds of things.
LOL, said as if WE don’t have those things too, in different ways.

“There does seem to be something odd about that culture with those kinds of things.”
Its not the culture, but rather the CCP that makes these stupid rules just to enrich its members.

China will just buy some F-35s from Biden to solve the problem. Or steal the plans and make their own F-35 knock offs. Biden will do it too—he owes them for the Covid Panic Pandemic that saw him in the White House. No Covid, no lockdowns, no mail in Ballots—we would have Trump in office. They have three years to tarnish Trump or shoot him. They will use the threat of Trump to keep the cash flowing in—until it doesn’t.
“So this death occurred five years ago, and we think by now the Chinese haven’t corrected the problem?”
You’ve never met ChiComm party members, have you?
That is a thoughtful post, and I think it is the very last line that is most impactful: “...unless we just roll over...”
I doubt that anywhere outside the South China Sea that they could compete head-to-head *right now* with the US military.
But it has always been my belief, rooted in concrete, that weakness invites aggression. I believe that as strongly as I believe in ANYTHING, because I have a view (what is called by Thomas Sowell in his seminal book “A Conflict of Visions: Ideological Origins of Political Struggles”) an “Constrained” view of mankind, which is what most conservatives have, and what the Founders most DEFINITELY believed.
It is the view that humans are not perfectible, we are flawed, there IS such a thing as evil that is innate to human nature, and that we should take those things into account.
To the Left (and a lot of liberals who may not be fully Left) they believe that humans are perfectible, that if we fix things like Poverty, Ignorance, and Disease (PID) that nobody will be evil. It is infantile and absurd, but they do believe this. This is called the “unconstrained” view.
And to me, a chief tenet of the “Constrained” view is that a part of human nature is the predatory aspect of evil watches for weakness and exploits it. Displaying weakness invites aggression.
And wow, do we ever display that in spades right now. Honestly, I cannot see how we will get through the next four years without the ChiComs making an aggressive military move somewhere. They are already mixing it up with Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and I will be astonished if something doesn’t catch fire and we get dragged into it unprepared. They have been whipping up the nationalistic feelings of Communist China with “This is our time, we have been downtrodden and disrespected for hundreds of years by the West...” etc. etc. etc.
And being unprepared is weakness, which will invite their aggression.
For someone like Xi, it's not that "might makes right" (which is too stupid for anyone to believe). Rather, as the Athenian General told the Melians (in paraphrase), "We know the way things really are, that among both gods and men, by nature, the strong do as they will and the weak suffer what they must." This is a claim to political knowledge and natural right. It's not just that the weak can be attacked by the stronger, it's that the weak ought to be attacked.
Declaring fault in yourself as we do (following centuries of the influence of Christianity) is not seen as an invitation to dialogue and compromise but as a display of moral weakness and vice. It's as though we admit fault and justify attack. That's why that ass Blinken got the golden shower of contempt from the Chinese in Alaska.
My last point is that in any armed confrontation China would find itself alone. It might persuade the Iranians to do something foolish, in which case the Israelis will probably just nuke them. Maybe the Russians will do something in Europe. But if things turn south, they'll be completely isolated. We would have the Australians and Brits and quite possibly the French as well as Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Hell, even the krauts are sending a couple of frigates to traverse the South China Sea.
I hadn’t even thought that through...but that is certainly plausible and more comforting, though probably not to those on Taiwan or on a warship over there.
Appropriate quote, by the way:
“We know the way things really are, that among both gods and men, by nature, the strong do as they will and the weak suffer what they must.”
People who understand that...understand it. Those who don’t, well...they will “suffer what they must”.
Sobering, but true.
