Well, there you have it. Was it worth it, long term? Short term it gets their operations going again. Long term, will this simply encourage more ransom demands?

This should be a wake up call about cyber security.

And maybe changes should be made in how some businesses operate. Clearly, the operations of this pipeline should not be on the internet.

I don’t know the answer, if some sort of closed network is needed, or maybe more human beings need to be employed to do some work which has been automated over the years.

As others have pointed out, this pipeline was built long before the internet was invented, and operated for decades without internet connections.

We’re going to find out exactly how “anonymous” a public ledger is or isn’t.

strike that - the specific crypto not stated, but it is untraceable. I’m not a crypto owner, so don’t know the ins and outs and there are a LOT of them.

This was not done by some elusive Russian ransomware hacker. Perhaps an inside job. The hacker crap is the cover story.

I need to learn more about Bitcoin and crypto currency. They say it’s untraceable, yet, supposedly all transactions are booked in multiple places, so the system has redundancy in tracking your Bitcoin balance and Bitcoin transactions.

So if your transactions are tracked in multiple locations, and the books have to balance and all that, then how are Bitcoin transactions considered untraceable?

I hope that Colonial has enough sense to fire their entire IT department.

Yes, it will encourage more ransom demands.
Yes, it needs to go offline or at least closed network.
Yes, they should have paid the ransom. It’s basically an expensive IT negligence bill.

No surprise that the ransom was paid. Everyone would have been dancing and celebrating if they had reopened the pipeline without paying the extortion.
