Pa. Republicans propose major election overhaul, including stricter voter ID rules and in-person early voting

The legislation proposed by state House Republicans is sure to draw intense scrutiny and will likely face steep obstacles.

Pennsylvania Republicans unveiled their first proposal for overhauling the state’s election system Thursday, with lawmakers in the state House hoping to make voter identification requirements stricter, establish in-person early voting, and require signature verification of mail ballots, among other major changes.

State Rep. Seth Grove (R., York), chair of the House State Government Committee and House Republicans’ point person for election legislation, plans to introduce the bill Thursday, after months of hearings with elections administrators, experts, and voting rights activists.

The legislation is sure to draw intense scrutiny and will likely face steep obstacles as Republican leaders, who control both chambers of the state legislature, try to keep their party unified while also winning the approval of Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf.

For example, Republicans have long called for stricter voter ID rules, saying they would prevent fraud. But there’s no evidence of successful widespread fraud, especially involving fake identities, and such rules can raise barriers to voting for low-income voters, older voters, and voters with disabilities. Even before the legislation was made public, Wolf said this week that any effort to impose new voter ID requirements would be a non-starter.

Election administration has become a highly charged political issue in Harrisburg and across the country, with Democrats accusing Republicans of seeking to weaponize election rules to disenfranchise voters. Several Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country have sought to tighten voting laws in the wake of the 2020 election and former President Donald Trump’s lies about fraud and election rigging.

A draft of the legislation was provided to The Inquirer and Spotlight PA ahead of the bill’s introduction.

Why do we need to vote early? Show up on one damn day and vote. If it's not important enough to you, then just don't bother.

I'm convinced that is why we are in this mess.

Wow, they are introducing election reform, as a bill. I am sure Wolf will sign that. And the Supreme Court of PA will approve it.

Or, or, how about passing it as a Constitutional Amendment and putting it straight to the voters. It worked with ending Wolf’s powers, why won’t it work with this?

Won’t solve the voting machine issues.

Which is why the RCV provisions are in HR1.

With those machines, even if EVERY voter is a legal voter, elections will STILL be stolen.

You could easily eliminate early voting if you had enough polls open. They used to be in every neighborhood, if you had to wait in line it was only a few minutes.

The leadership in PA is weak. I remember Mark Levin saying they wouldn’t come on his radio show before or after the 2020 Election.

Manchin and Sinema are voting AGAINST HR1. HR1 is dead.
Changing voting machines and voting companies is not going to be that hard.

Here in Pa, the R party are a bunch of cucks. All talk, no action!!
I’ll believe any serious action, when I see it!

These dumb GOP bastards in PA were the ones who loosened the rules in the first place in 2019.

“These dumb GOP bastards in PA were the ones who loosened the rules in the first place in 2019.”

Factually incorrect. They were loosened as part of a lawsuit and the order to do so came from the D rich State Supreme Court. When Republicans tried to bring a suit against it the court said “No one has been harmed yet. You have to wait for someone to be harmed”. So they were forced to wait until the election.

When that suit was brought to the court they said “Latches. You waited too long.” They then kicked it up to the SCOTUS, who declined to take the case.

Please get your facts in order. I'm not talking about the blatantly illegal changes implemented in 2020 by the Wolf administration. I'm talking about the 2019 law that made it easier to vote by mail in the first place.

Yes, they passed universal, mail in ballots BEFORE the Wu Flu and they did it unconstitutionally.

That allowed the dems to steal the election.

First, we must get rid of Wolf, one way or another.

I favor a recall, as with Newsom of California.
