Union workers protest Boston’s in-person work order

BOSTON (AP) — A union that represents about 800 Boston city employees who have been working remotely during the pandemic has filed an unfair labor practices claim against acting Mayor Kim Janey’s administration for unilaterally ordering them back to the office.

The Service Employees International Union Local 888 filed the complaint with the state on Thursday, the Boston Herald reported.

“The City refused in good faith to bargain about health and safety issues, family and childcare issues (especially single and low wage employees), and productivity issues (as the evidence will show that many of the job tasks have been accomplished at a higher rate due to the use of virtual meetings and technology),” the union wrote in the complaint.

Janey this month ordered remote workers back in phases in late June and early July.

“The city did not explain why the return to physical work locations was necessitated on the dates picked for reopening other than they have the right to do it,” the SEIU wrote.

This is idiotic. I am working from home but I KNOW this will end. And on that day I’ll be retiring.

They don’t have to give a reason for why people have to go back in the office. There was a reason they had them work from home, and that reason is gone. So back they go.

It’s really that simple.

Stupid managers still have not figured out how to manage home workers—and you can’t fix stupid.

That's because many have spent years using the number of hours you car is in the work parking lot as a metric.

Now, they don't know what to do.

Well, I love it. However, meetings suck. Seriously. We’re not there yet, technologically.

If the reason is to avoid the spread of person to person communicable disease, that reason still exists. We must live in bubbles until danger of ANY kind, COVID or otherwise, is eradicated.

I am retired, but in my previous white collar number crunching job there was no reason to go to the office.

The office was a horrid waste of them with stupid meetings, idiotic co-workers blabbering about their personal lives, and a variety of other disruptions.

Then there was the commute wasting more of my time.

Total joke.

Anyone with a job that can be done remotely for a extended period of time...can be done in some turd-world hellhole for just a couple dollars a day!

People better get their ass back to work before corp figures that out.

I’m totally with you. I’m also saving 3 hours a day not commuting.

But this is killing the quality of meetings.

The ZOOM meetings are horrible. I would much rather be back in the office where you can see people face to face and get problems solved right away.

If I hear "can you hear me" and "you're on mute" one more time, I think I'm going to have to hit somebody.

I go into the office at least twice a week but nobody is there. It's kind of weird being in the office and doing ZOOM meetings with everybody else sitting at home in their t-shirts and whatnot.

Actually you are on to a deeper issue.

Most white collar number crunching jobs could be done by computers alone.

The only thing preventing that is that corporate software development remains in the stone age—they are unable to bring in complex projects on time and on budget. With affirmative action raising the level of incompetence, the human replacement project could be delayed by decades.

“Most white collar number crunching jobs could be done by computers alone.”

Plenty of them in India along with dirt cheap labor.
