Florida Braces For Another Saharan Dust Storm
The Daily Handle ^ | 6-19-2021

Ten days ago, NASA’s satellite spotted a massive dust storm blowing off the Sahara Desert and into the waters of the Atlantic Basin. At the time, we forecasted dust clouds were “headed for the Americas.”

Fast forward today, millions of tons of Sahara’s nutrient-laden minerals have been whisked across the Atlantic Ocean and are set to arrive in South Florida on Friday or Saturday.

Satellite footage shows the airborne dust particles have already blanketed parts of the Caribbean.

What to expect in South Florida?

Well, of course, dust can deteriorate air quality but also create milky, hazy colored skies.

According to NOAA, “Sunsets and sunrises take on more yellow and reddish hues because the low-angle sunlight passes through more of the atmosphere before it reaches your eyes. A heavy load of dust in the atmosphere can enhance this effect, leading to longer-lasting, duskier colors that cause vivid sunsets and sunrises.”

This latest storm comes one year after the largest dust storm in two decades blanketed the Caribbean and even dimmed skies over US Gulf states.

Skywatchers are already reporting “some Saharan dust effect here in Florida this morning beautiful sunrise.”

I used to get this orange dust on my car when I lived in Florida.( Yes a virus can make the trip from Africa to Florida on the dust alive)

I found this real interesting too:

Saharan Dust And The formation Of Bahamas' Great Bank

"Swart's team suggests that high concentrations of iron-rich dust blown across the Atlantic Ocean from the Sahara is responsible for the existence of the Great Bahama Bank, which has been built up over the last 100 million years from sedimentation of calcium carbonate. The dust particles blown into the Bahamas' waters and directly onto the islands provide the nutrients necessary to fuel cyanobacteria blooms, which in turn, produce carbonate whitings in the surrounding waters."

Well we’re not getting Saharan Dust in NevaDUH so where’s the equity in that?

We used to get a lot of dust on our cars in FL as well. Mostly pine pollen. With a smattering of luvbugs twice a year. :-)

And we thought Africa didn’t have an emissions problem.

Tax them!

That reminded me of a news report from 30+ years ago about a concrete plant putting out cement dust that settled on neighbors cars overnight then set up with the morning dew fell.

Somewhere in FL IIRC.

Orange dust that is thicker than imaginable. I always thought it was mixed with pollen. Nope - amazing how sucha mass of material can be blown across the Atlantic and mess up my white car.

So the Sahara Desert is disapearing?

Ever since FL and Africa split up millions of years ago, Africa has been sending these little hurricanes and dust storms out of spite.

Oh, I remember it well. My black grand prix became an odd greenish yellow during that time of the year. Rather that than luvbugs though.

"Ever since FL and Africa split up millions of years ago.."

120 million years ago...and, continues to separate at the same speed as your fingernails grow.

I often use that date when contrasting how old this rain forest in Malasyia is.

Taman Negara

"Taman Negara has a total area of 4,343 km2 and it is one of the world's oldest deciduous rainforests, estimated to be more than 130 million years old.[2][3] "

That's a lot of leaf litter in that rain forest, eh?

Hi.

Dust storms, hurricanes, snakes and mosquitos. Don’t come to Florida or the alligators will get you.

We need sand for concrete and Biden’s infra-bust-yer-hiney project.

There is NO way to describe to someone who’s never experienced a serious luv bug attack what one is like.
I have a big R.V. and when I get it bad it takes forever to clean.

“...amazing how such a mass of material can be blown across the Atlantic and mess up my white car.”

Put a couple of coats of ceramic coating on the car and it will hose off in nothing flat.
