In context it should be obvious. If one knows what a hireling is, then it’s obvious who the slave is they’re referring to.
The colonists thought of themselves as a freed people. They set themselves apart from men forced to fight and those fighting for mere money. The colonial slaves the Brits took up, weren’t forced to fight. They did so voluntarily. And when they were done, many relocated to the Caribbean where slavery was legal.

How does it work that she was give every opportunity to compete if the US is so racist and unequal. I know what and HOW much money it takes to train and compete.
Did her parents provide it? Did some others?
I know athletes of great ability who never had the funds nor the support to reach the finals. They were white.
