San Jose Will Force Gun Owners to Cover Costs of Gun Violence After Mass Shooting
The Daily Beast ^ | Jun. 30, 2021 | Jamie Ross

Just five weeks after last month’s massacre at a San Jose light-rail yard that left nine people dead, the city has taken unprecedented gun-control action.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, San Jose’s city council approved a national first that will see gun owners being forced to compensate taxpayers for the spiraling costs of gun violence. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, gun owners in California’s third-largest city will be required to take out liability insurance for their firearms, and pay an annual tax that will help fund emergency responses to gun-related calls.

In a news release ahead of Tuesday night’s vote, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said: “While the Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms, it does not require taxpayers to subsidize gun ownership... We won’t magically end gun violence, but we stop paying for it. We can also better care for its victims, and reduce gun-related injuries and death.”

I expect this to be hung up in the courts for quite a while. And how would they know who has a gun and how many? Unenforceable non-solution that again only penalizes law abiding citizens.

California has registration requirements. If you bought your guns in CA, they know you have them.

Doesn’t the NRA have an insurance program? Will their numbers rise because of this foolish mayor?

Here goes another round of Calif Exodus...

In Jan/Feb of 2021, U-Haul was refusing one way rentals out of Calif.

Precedent set.

Now are all blacks financially responsible for BLM damages?

Got a better idea.
When someone is convicted of murder, confiscate all of his property and wealth, then pith him like a frog and sell his organs.
That’s how murderers can cover the cost of violence.

Second Amendment

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.

I see CA doing this infringing on the rights of legal firearms owners.

Unconstitutional, and needs to be trashed...

And when it gets to the SupremeCourt, Roberts will do a repeat of what he did on 0bamacare... Force people to buy outrageously expensive insurance, call it a tax and everything is just hunky dory with all but Alito and Thomas.

Then every other leftist run city, county and state will do the same.

A tax to exercise a constitutional right? Kind of like a poll tax, no? Seems like they are on pretty shakey legal ground.

Only for handguns until very recently. Also that data is not available to local jurisdictions.

Can they get a subsidy for the benefits of gun ownership?

What a wonderful means to register/list firearms. Further, they can outlaw firearms by getting their insurance cancelled.

My point was merely that forcing people exercising their 2A rights to cover the cost of criminals (who happen to use firearms in the commission of crimes) is as unfair and illogical as forcing Blacks to cover the cost of Black crime, or as forcing publishing houses (1A rights) to cover the cost of criminals abusing their 1A rights (e.g., when committing slander and libel).

My point is that the people responsible should cover the cost of the violence. Since they likely don’t have a great net worth, there are other ways they can be made to pay.
Anyway, this is unlikely to stand up in court so it amounts to political theater.
