New and Used Car Prices Soar Due to Microchip Shortage

A microchip shortage is translating to higher car prices across America.

CBS reported that the average price of a new car has topped $40,000 and that used car prices have risen nearly 30 percent due to the shortage.

Lansing, Michigan, resident Heather Lyons knows that firsthand.

In looking to buy a replacement for a totaled car, she said she will end up paying more to get less, according to WILX-TV.

“It really is bad. My car payment last time for a decent vehicle was something I could afford and this time it’s going to be a worse vehicle for more than I was paying before,” Lyons said.

She said she is paying $4,000 more than she did for a similar car a year ago.

Dealers admit prices are high.

My vehicle was totaled in May and I got hosed for a new car. I had to have it. First time in 40 years of car buying that I couldn’t make the deal I wanted.

It should be considered a national security issue. We sent all our chipmaking overseas.

If we ever got in a prolonged war with China, are we going to ask them to send us the microchips we need for our smart bombs?

Its not a law you can only buy a car from a dealer.

Its also not a law you must only buy a new car.

Sorry to hear about this accident. But just as new car prices are off the charts, so are used car prices. Hopefully you got paid very very well on the claim for your totaled car.

Evidently you haven't checked the prices of used vehicles lately.

All I buy is used vehicles, but they are out of sight now.

Obey the supply-and-demand curve. It's the law.

Kind of sucks - I was kind of eyeing up maybe getting hold of a high-MPG small SUV to drive around, to give the truck a break. Not going to pay an arm and a leg for it though.

Apparently people never heard of private sellers?

There are a lot of cars for sale on back county highways and such. Especially the small-town car dealers.

This is more of a case in which people want the latest and greatest. Personally, I think there should be zero computer technology in cars. All it does is drive out the independent auto mechanic shops and force everyone to get service from a dealer.

I have my 2014 Jeep Patriot and yes it is RED...

Only 50,000 miles on it and it is in perfect shape like its owner, ;)

I also get to work remotely, so no extra miles. Hopefully this will last 13 more years...

It’s not the law, of course, but it procides the best protection for the consumer, who is typically making the second largest investment of their lives. So regardless of the alternatives, the primary goto for many consumers will be a dealership. Yeap, they’re screwed.
