Many years ago I read his books and had a ton of respect for his perspective.

Yes. His more academic papers and work I read as both an undergrad and a grad student and they were actually quite good. His more serious stuff on the classic philosophers, if it can be found, is actually very good. I have often found his work regarding literature good. I agree, his race based stuff is lacking.

That is true, however, you usually get a minimum of one year to find another job if you don’t get tenure. Usually there is a signal to start looking well before the final decision is made and most people leave. Nikole Hannah Jones was probably talking or Howard well in advance of the final decision concerning fee tenure at North Carolina I have seen a couple of strong teachers who were denied tenure get an extra year or so at the lecturer level/limited contract to only teach for a couple of years beyond tenure.
True scholars need no tenure
