The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada has issued a powerful statement against unnamed individuals it claims “worship” the communion spoon and refuse vaccines.
The unusually strongly-worded statement was posted on the Archdiocese’s Facebook page on Wednesday, July 21. The post isn’t signed by an individual and doesn’t carry the signature of the Archbishop Sotirios of Canada.
Do You Worship the Communion Spoon? Then You Are a Pagan.
What a shame that you refuse to understand this. You continue to think that you are more orthodox than others. You shout in all directions that you possess the truth. Without realizing it, you deify the spoon. Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ. It is medicine for immortality. The communion spoon is merely an instrument. It is a vehicle through which Holy Communion is given and nothing else. Do you worship the communion spoon? Then you are a pagan.
All of the newly proclaimed infallible are pagans without even realizing it. They howl that they have the truth. That they know better. That they are the genuine orthodox believers. That no one really understands what is happening in the world. Not the governments. Not the doctors. Not the patriarchs. Not the hierarchs. Not the priests.
For these people, conspiracy is everywhere. Everything comes from Satan. Only they have the truth. Vaccines are not necessary. Everything is a lie. It is all propaganda. They do not want us to listen to the scientists but to listen to what they have to say. They are the infallible. They have even surpassed the Pope, yet they claim to be genuinely Orthodox.

Do these Orthodox realize that many evangelicals regard their statues and icons and devotions to Mary and the saints as “idolatrous”?
To finish my point, will they get rid of those alleged idolatries as well? And do they realize that Muslims regard their divinization of Jesus as idolatrous? Will they dump that too?
Sometimes the wolf pretends to be a shepherd and Inthink the Greek Orthodox Church in Canada is a wolf.
As long as their vestments are silk and their altars are dripping with gold the perfumed princes of many churches will sell their flock to the wolves.
As in most religious squabbles, the only real true issue is whether a religion upgolds Jesus as Jehovah God.
If you're gonna fuss, fuss at the church's enemies, not its allies.

The Hierarchs made a dreadful mistake—like the 3rd century Donatists—by handing over the ultimate treasure of the Church (the Holy Sacraments) to the secular aurhorities when they allowed themselves and our communities to be labelled “non-essential”.
Anything to say about the Church arsons, etc.?
Any true Christian these days should be very weary of their “leadership”.
The sell-outs are going to try to cancel you or worse.

Our Priests are the most active people I know in urging us to get vaccinated. That is because they want to get us back to normal Church life, which we are rapidly doing!!!!
However, they do not REQUIRE us to get vaccinated—with one exception. My OCA Priest requires one to be vaccinated if one sings in the choir. They also urge unvaccinated people to continue to mask up.
The anticipated return of after-Liturgy lunches and the Serbian festival this fall in our Serbian parish may persuade the remaining holdouts to get vaccinated. I pray that the Delta variant doesn’t ruin our plans!!
As for the Communion spoon, that goes with the more normal administration of Communion which we already have as of the beginning of June. We all worship Christ in the Sacrament, not the spoon. I don’t know if ANY Orthodox worships the spoon—that’s just nonsense!!!!
I was thinking the same as I was reading it...not coherent, more anger. I think this is a big turn-off. Just my opinion, of course.
Orthodox do not have statues, but the Catholics so.
As for icons and devotion to the Theotokos (Mother of God), the fundamentalist Protestants are missing centuries of Councils that supported these practices!!
The current vaccines are immoral because they use abortion cell lines in some capacity.
I’m a Roman in Canada, and feel blessed inasmuch as our Priest has been supportive of those of us who receive on the tongue, and the Bishop backed him up in a show down with the health authorities.
Having lived through the 70’s and 80’s this is something to be thankful for.
Sorry that y’all on the other side of the Bosporus have largely the same problems we have. Chrysostom says the majority of Bishops go to Hell, and it that phenomena may not be unique to his era.
Chrysostom did not say that the majority of Bishops go to Hell—just enough do to pave the floor with their skulls!!!!
I’ve learned not to judge Bishops, since my initial judgments have been proven wrong several times!! (God gave me the opportunity to forgive several Bishops in the Divine Liturgy!) However, it was wrong to go along with the secular authorities who declared Church “nonessential”!!!!
