British Man Builds ‘Hobbit House’ in His Backyard to Fulfill Childhood Dream
The Epoch Times ^ | August 8, 2021 | SWNS

An IKEA employee from Scotland has fulfilled his childhood dream of building a “Hobbit House” in his back garden.

Ali Hughson, 47, has been a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien since he was a teenager and loved the idea of having a Hobbit-themed workshop. Ali spent six months and 2,000 pounds (approx. US$2,800) building the 2-meter-tall shed, which even features the iconic round green door made famous in the Peter Jackson films.

“When I was around 13 I read ‘The Hobbit’, and then watched ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movies when they got released,” Ali said. “I’ve been a fan of ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ all my life, I just love all that magical stuff.”

Wood artist Ali, who also works with IKEA, says he was always fascinated by the idea of the hobbits’ houses and of being underground and surrounded by nature.

“There were illustrations in the books so I kind of had an idea from my younger days, then the movies brought it to life,” Ali said. “I just wanted to make something more magical than your normal garden shed.”

Yes. It’s an outhouse with a round door.

And, it’s above ground.

It’s all fun and games until somebody uses the wrong plural of Proudfoot.

What have you built?

I like the creativity and sentiment involved when people do things like this.

(And a round door is probably the greatest signifier to most people of a ‘Hobbit House’.)

I expected it to be underground. That’s what I thought a Hobbit house was.

This is a garden tool shed.

What have you built?

I’ve built castles in the sky.

But I’m not the one who criticized the guy’s effort. That was you.

It was not what was advertised. What is your problem?

Art has to be appreciated by the viewer. You can’t “shame” someone into liking your art.

I say it falls far short of a “Hobbit House” in my view.

It was over-billed, for a “childhood dream”.

I thought it was a pretty good effort, and very attractive.

I’d like to have a shed just like it in my yard.

I guess we have different senses of ‘artistic appreciation’.

I saw a youtube video of a guy who actually built his home into a hill. You could only crawl around in it, but it was cozy. It was his idea of a “tiny house.”

Not a Hobbit house... It has to be underground first.

I am too busy building my own "Fortress of Solitude" in my backyard to pay attention to things like this.

What if you’re entranced by the concept, but don’t have a hill to burrow into?

For someone with limited resources, it’s a great effort.
