North Texas doctors have quietly developed a plan that seeks to prepare for the possibility that due to the COVID-19 surge the region will run out of intensive-care beds.
If that happens, for the first time, doctors officially will be allowed to take vaccination status of sick patients into account along with other triage factors to see who gets a bed.
A copy of an internal memo written by Dr. Robert Fine, co-chair of the North Texas Mass Critical Care Guideline Task Force, was sent to members of the task force -- and leaked to The Watchdog. It summarizes the latest work by the task force, a volunteer group that periodically updates medical guidelines for hospitals in our region. There are about 50 members from various hospitals in the group. Although their recommendations are not enforceable, the guidelines are generally followed.
The one-page summary memo is a “heads up” alert in the event things get worse, says Dr. Mark Casanova, director of clinical ethics for Baylor University Medical Center and a spokesperson for the task force. After Monday’s meeting, doctors had yet to make plans to inform the public.
“We’re trying to decide how to explain this addition to the public,” Casanova said.
But after studying the memo and interviewing doctors involved in the decision for two hours this week, The Watchdog can explain it to you.
Although doctors make triage decisions all the time, the proposed guideline addition is significant. Casanova predicted that if this change were copied by others medical care, for as long as the crisis persists, “is going to look and feel different for everybody who is alive right now in the United States of America.”

The on-going moral collapse of the US in particular, and the west in general has accelerated at an astonishing pace. The question is, what is to be done?
It would be real nice of the doctors would start treating the patients with anti viral medicines. like they used to before they all became corporate shills.
I won’t get vaccinated and too many in my circle think I’m making a big mistake. If I die from it due to the refusal of an IUC bed it’s tough kitty on my part. The left wants to deny me that right to be wrong.
LOL... I think you need a new circle
Do they consider legal status?
Insurance stays/ability to pay?
No.
Many hospitals stating ICU is full are lying. The rest are testing everyone admitted to the hospital (e.g., broken bones) and if the fake PCR test with a 97%+ false positive rate incorrectly says they are positive for Covid (the test doesn’t work) then they go straight to ICU and are counted as ‘covid patients’. Big bucks in that - around $50K for starters and more each day needlessly held in ‘quarantine’ for people who don’t have Covid but are falsely claimed as ‘ asymptomatic’.
Then, deny non vaccinated actual treatment.
Weren’t we told that vaccinated people have essentially a zero percent chance of needing ICU hospitalizations?
I thought only unvaccinated people would need those beds.
We were told....
Lies.
Lies.
Lies.
Lies.
More lies.
Oh no! How will I blow out my lungs with a ventilator now? I don’t even get a chance to recant my wicked unvaxxed ways on my hospital deathbed.
Problem solved. Start TREATING patients instead of controlling their death spiral!
I would think the unvaccinated should get preference because according to Fauci, the vaccinated get much less severe symptoms. Though personally, I don’t believe that for a minute. They are going by number from when people first got vaccinated. There is no current data that supports that.
What about a patient’s weight? Smoker or non? Drinker? Promiscuous? So many behaviors by which to judge worthiness/s
You beat me to it...
If you were vaccinated, why would you be in the hospital? And if we were all vaccinated and requiring hospitalization, how would they limit care? My take away is, the vaccination only entitles you to preferential treatment.
Here’s an idea. How about treating Americans only. One of the reasons why Texas is leading the nation in Covid cases is because of Biden giving an open door policy for Mexicans with Covid to infest our state.
How about Citizens First and Illegals GO HOME
Exactly.
They’re employing political considerations when making triage decisions, which is a gigantic ethical breech.
This starts with the COVID vaccine, but does not end there.
And it should not matter if one took the vax or chose not to. This is wrong any way you look at it.
Red meat eating, exercise regime
Many judgy ways of dictating
But Vee hov vaays of making you take zee experimental mRNA altering dangerous substance made mit aborted Fetuses
Do not think that this will end with this vaccine mandate.
Once politics are part of the decision of who gets access to medical care and who does not, there is no end to it.
You are absolutely correct in your statement. The coercion is unacceptable. And I will go you one further. Currently on one of my hospitals we have expanded our icu capacity by a factor of two. I am running twice as many advanced airway patients then usual.
In medicine you do what you have to do. Some of our nurses have worked for 20 days straight. Our medical staff is working night and day. This is the difference between clinical staff and this idiot bioethicist.
Yes we have contingency plans. But not one is based on the status of any patient prior to admission. We will get through this and at least where I work will not turn anyone away who needs our attention.
While these are the times that try a mans soul, I and my colleagues choose to rise to the occasion instead of looking for ways to lessen the load
Thank you for posting this. This hospital system disgusts me.
Sanctioned by the govt. Like the heart transplant patient in Washington state. No shot, no heart. Hospital policy. Now called the “hypocritic oath”. First, do no harm. Unless the patient is vaccine hesitant thereby meaning they are a terror risk.
