Jimmy Carter, trounced in 1980, gets fresh look from history

ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter is sometimes called a better former president than he was president.

Nodding to Carter’s decades of work as a globe-trotting humanitarian but with a glaring reminder of his landslide defeat in 1980, the backhanded compliment rankles Carter allies and, they say, the former president himself.

Yet now, 40 years removed from the White House, the most famous resident of Plains, Georgia, is riding a new wave of attention as biographers, filmmakers, climate activists and Carter’s fellow Democrats push to recast his presidential legacy, even as Republicans sometimes try to remind voters of the volatile economy and international affairs that doomed Carter to one term.

The renewed spotlight is especially significant for the broad swath of Americans too young to remember a presidency that spanned from 1977 to 1981. Sandwiched between the Watergate era of Richard Nixon and two terms of Ronald Reagan, Carter’s tenure came before Millennials or Generation Z voters were born and earlier than most of Generation X reached political awareness.

Jimmah can now go to his grave safe in the knowledge that he’s no longer the worst president in modern history.

In the short term almost all Carter’s decisions were a disaster, but he looks somewhat better over the long-term for two very good decisions:

1) To oppose the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which eventually brought down the USSR
2) To allow Volcker to stop the presses and tame inflation, leading to decades of price stability

Islam was headed toward the dustbin of history (or morphing into some nohostile modern version.). Carter by allowing radical Islam (Shia version) to suceed. He emboldened radical Sunni versions. Anyone who doesn’t believe that the Carter era was a turning point can go look on the Internet and find !960s sylish dress of young men & women in Iran & Kabul. If you want to trace the change also look for class pictures of American Universoti Cairo & Beirut). Particularly look at the young women they went from stylish European fashions (worn somewhat modestly!) to class pictures of laundry bags with eyeslits. You can almost track the changes by year.

And its true it wasn’t only Carter, European cowardice played a big role too!

One time when Jimmy was Gov. Of Ga. he went to Savanna and rented a charter boat. The captain of said boat did not like Jimmy. The boat went to the most polluted part of the Atlantic Ocean near Savanna. Jimmy asked, if was safe to go swimming there. No problem of pollution? The Captain said free from pollution. Perfect for swimming. Jimmy put on his swim suit and swam around in the most polluted part of the waters near Savanna. And then there were stories about Chip Carter. Dealing drugs while living in the Gov. Mansion. Would use State Patrol cars with officers driving to deliver Chip to and from the drug deals. The basic theme is that Jimmy was way far too trusting. And was easily conned by just about any person.

Billy was a saint and then some compared to Hunter. Hunter is lower than the dung of a dung beetle.

Carter is a good man. He was, in my impression, a patriot. A lot of bad stuff happened under his watch and perhaps he wasn’t up to it but he tried. But I would take him now over Biden 10 times out of 10.

Because of Carter though we got Clinton-ManBearPig ticket and the “southern strategy” - Democrats believed if they put 2 southerners on the ticket they would win the south. And more or less it worked.

There are two types of horrible politicians:

1.) Marxists, who promise utopia, but really aim to destroy the Republic by stirring hatred and social divisions, engineering economic failure and promoting violence and lawlessness.

2.) Useful idiots who believe the Marxists’ lies and actually think they are doing the right thing.

It’s hard to tell them apart because the Marxists are skilled at deception, but I’d say Jimmy Carter, the Bushes and Joe Biden are useful idiots, while Barack Obama is probably a true Marxist.

Joe Biden is totally surrounded by and controlled by Marxists.

He has been a worse former President, than President. Whenever the media likes someone, it means they are rotten. He has pushed anti-Israel garbage, which is probably why the left loves him.

Carter is moving up in the ratings, but only because we're filling in underneath. Presidents worse than Carter but better than Buchanan.

At least Carter had a moral compass. Poor judgement, but some sense of morality.

For quite a few years now, young people have been taught in high school and college history classes that Reagan was a total monster while Carter was a good guy who just wasn’t quite up to fighting the fascist forces.

...as biographers, filmmakers, climate activists and Carter’s fellow Democrats push to recast his presidential legacy...

Why would they need to “recast” his legacy, just tell
the truth.

He lost that title to Obama. Now Biden is trying to take it from Barry.

“the economic malaise of the mid to late 1970s was the inevitable result of the fiscal irresponsibility of the Johnson and Nixon administrations”

That may be true, but Carter’s eagerness to lean into the malaise was one of the nails in his political coffin.

I’ll always remember Election Night in 1980 when John Chancellor on NBC declared Reagan the winner at around 8:15 EST and then about an hour later seeing President Jimmah, with the look of a man who had been crying for hours, conceding the race. He was a lousy president to put it mildly, but he is a decent man. There wasn’t much accomplished in Carter’s presidency, but I respect him for presiding over an orderly transition to Ronald Reagan, which he did with a lot of class and dignity. He didn’t do any of the dirty s**t to Reagan that Clinton and Obama did to their Republican successors!
