The 'Absolute Worst Thing' That Could Happen to the Electric Vehicle Industry Right Now Just Did (Round 3?)

GM announced that it has issued a recall on every single Chevy Bolt made to date due to the battery fire risk. The move comes after two previous recalls, which were aimed at specific models.

The Bolt was first recalled in November after five cars that hadn’t been in crashes caught fire. After investigating the problem further, Chevy recalled a second batch in July. The problem was traced to two manufacturing defects that could occur simultaneously. The defects—a torn anode tab and a folded separator—created conditions that could lead to a short in affected cells. So far, the company has identified 10 fires that involve faulty batteries, according to an AP report.

This third and latest recall includes 73,000 Bolts made from 2019 to 2022, the current model year, and brings the total recall to nearly 142,000 cars, with over 100,000 having been sold in the US. GM estimates that the initial recalls will cost $800 million, and it expects the new one to add $1 billion to the total. GM said it will be seeking reimbursement from LG. […]

Until replacement batteries are ready and service appointments can be scheduled, GM has recommended that Bolt owners park their vehicles outside and limit their battery’s state of charge to 90 percent or lower. The company also recommended not letting the estimated range dip below 70 miles.....

As Tom’s Guide notes, the recall isn’t just a massive hit to Chevrolet. It's "arguably the absolute worst thing to happen to the electric car industry right now" because it “could scare off a lot of EV shoppers.” This comes on the heels of President Biden signing an executive order that sets a goal of making half of all new cars sold by 2030 electric.

DOH! Gee golly. This just is soul crushing. Has anyone let grrrrrreta know this calamitous news yet. I love the smell of burning 'bolts' in the morning. As long as they're in the driveway and not in the garage.

The good news is that the country is building hundreds of new power plants to supply all the electricity that will be needed for the electric vehicle fleet...

Oops!

All those billions of dollars wasted!
I suppose there will be many parts still salvagable.

The problem with the battery was supposed to have been discovered during project development. Right?
It was a design flaw.
I suspect some within project development will end of being ‘re-assigned’ to other, less crucial jobs.

EV manufacters from Japan and Europe are probably giving each other a High Five, celebrating their good fortune.

"The defects—a torn anode tab and a folded separator—created conditions …"

Union-made no doubt—"Look for the Union label".

Batteries are dangerous.

Anyone who has dealt with big electric vehicles (like fork trucks) for any length of time has stories.

The old lead acid batteries were fairly safe. They got to the point where you could kill the battery, but not burn the plant down.

The new Lithium ones are very good, but every once in a while turn into a torch. Enough that the first generation of Li for truck batteries were put in a special area just in case.

I do wonder how the EV’s meet residential fire code.

GM messed up - they didn’t get Uncle Sap to grant them immunity from lawsuits before putting out this deathtrap.

If they had, they could have called it the “Jab.”

The problem with the battery was supposed to have been discovered during project development. Right? It was a design flaw.

It's almost a metaphor for the vaccine industry. Not enough testing time to shake out all the flaws.

If GM goes completely electric, they’ll go completely out of business.

Once a technology is mature, safe, reliable and affordable the “powers that be” push a new unproven, expensive replacement.
