If the question is, “Could China take over Bagram now that we’ve left?” then the answer is “Yes.”
If the second question is, “But will they?” then the answer to that is, “Probably.”
US News & World Report revealed late on Tuesday that China’s military planners are “conducting a feasibility study about the effect of sending workers, soldiers and other staff” related to Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.
That’s according to Chinese officials who spoke to USN&WR on the condition of anonymity. But you can be sure that they had been authorized to speak from on high, signaling Communist China’s true intentions regarding post-Pax Americana Afghanistan.
Presidentish Joe Biden seems OK with that, too.
Exiting Marine One on the White House lawn last night, Biden was asked by a reporter, “Mr. President, are you worried that the Taliban will get funding from China?”
Biden answered, “Well, China has a real problem with the Taliban, so they’re going to try to work out some arrangement with the Taliban, I’m sure — as does Pakistan, as does Russia, as does Iran. They’re all trying to figure out, what do they do now. So it will be interesting to see what happens.”
Interesting is a word for it, yes.
The other word for it is: Awful.
I can say that with complete confidence because everything is proceeding as I have foreseen.

It’s theirs for the taking. Given the demonstrated strategic “expertise” at the top of the U.S. government it’s ripe fruit. Austin, Milley, and Blinken are some of the best strategic assets the PRC ever had.

the FR has become home to so many China toadies it’s disgusting. Afghanistan will chew the CCP up like it has every other power. Just give it time.
China could provide jobs in their new mines. Hell, they could ship the Uyghurs there.

Unlike the US or the USSR, the PRC isn’t going to make the mistake of trying to transform Afghanistan,
I’m curious to know why so many think China is going to send in troops. They’re going in there to get the lithium and other minerals. For them, it’s a business deal. They’ll use slave labor, possibly the Muslim Uyghurs. Pay off the Taliban to keep everyone safe.
And if some Taliban guy gets froggy and schwacks a couple of Uyghurs, does anyone think the Chinese will care.
The Taliban is soon, going to be swimming in cash......

As long as that money is flowing to Taliban leadership, everything and everyone will be safe.
They’ll have money from the mining. They’ll have money from all the heroin, meth and weed they’ll export to the US, on Chinese ships via Mexico.
And when they figure out that they can make billions by allowing their fellow savages to leave, request asylum in the US, get asylum and refugee status, pop out some citizens in local hospitals, all of whom will start sending some of their welfare money back home, they’ll have wire transfer locations all over the place. They’ll skim a certain percentage and, once again, the US taxpayer will be propping up their economy, making the Taliban rich, while we go broke.

They have a base in Djibouti, why not Bagram?
They’d be foolish not to. Not “take it over” exactly, but offer their new besties, the Taliban, to use their organizational skills to keep it up and running smoothly. And perhaps they can help the cavemen put the abandoned U.S. high-tech goodies to good use.
Afghanistan has never been stable enough to exploit its mineral resources safely. Not when the Russians were running the show. Not under the U.S. Not in the dozen years or so between. That’s not going to change soon. Add to that the fact that there is literally no infrastructure that can support large scale mining - railways, highways, electrical grid - so it would have to be built almost from scratch. That’s billions of dollars of investment in unstable areas of the country before you can even begin mining.
The last thing China wants is more people to control.
They have gone into Africa, paid off the leaders, and exploited the resources. They send in their own people. They use locals for scut work.
They don’t give a hoot about the native people. They don’t care about the environment. And they really don’t care if little girls go to school.
China doesn’t want to occupy anyone. They want to control the world’s economy.
Probably true. But I would but that China will last longer in Afghanistan than the Americans, the Russians, or the British did.
They will probably strip mine the place of any valuable minerals and abandon it when their is nothing left to take away.
