So what does Gladys' shock resignation mean for NSW's roadmap to freedom? Premier's likely successor may have a VERY different approach to the pandemic - as two other contenders for the top job are revealed (Australia)

The sudden end of Gladys Berejiklian's premiership means NSW's 'roadmap to freedom' may look radically different once her successor takes power.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is the frontrunner to take over from Ms Berejiklian with Planning Minister Rob Stokes and Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres also considered contenders when the NSW Liberal parliamentary party meets to choose a new leader on Tuesday.

While Ms Berejiklian has stuck closely to the plan endorsed by the national cabinet for a path out of Covid-19 restrictions, Mr Perrotet's public statements reveal a less patient approach to re-opening the NSW economy.

While he has been careful not to publicly disagree with the plan to restore many freedoms to the state's residents as the 70 and 80 per cent full vaccination thresholds are passed, Mr Perrottet had previously expressed frustration at the prospect of Australia becoming 'a hermit kingdom'.

After the state was plunged into lockdown, there were claims Mr Perrottet had stridently opposed extending restrictions during a crisis cabinet meeting.

In response, Mr Perrottet told 2GB's Ben Fordham: 'My job is to advocate for businesses and keeping people in jobs and that's what I do, what I don't do is speak about the individual positions that ministers take in relation to those discussions.'

In a recent interview with Daily Mail Australia, Mr Perrottet predicted a 'glorious summer' ahead for NSW as life began to return to normal.

'Now as Australians, and particularly in NSW, we've got restrictions in place and you look overseas and we see the US Open packed, the Premier League with packed crowds and we go ''we want to have that'', and that's what we're going to have here in NSW as we open up in a safe way,' he said.

If Dominic Perrottet does become Premier - he’s the front runner at the moment but not the only choice - I think he is likely to improve matters. I’m not sure by how much - NSW was already heading towards reopening so he may not make as dramatic changes as a new leader in (for example) Victoria might. Or he might decide that this is a chance for a total reset, and dramatically accelerate things.

Well, I'm impressed with this so-called probe...

Gladys Berejiklian Is Resigning As Premier Of New South Wales

I can't believe that expletive-deleted would resign over something so picayune.

Given the natural path of viruses (with or without lockdowns and vaccines that don’t actually stop the virus) I like his odds in the next few weeks. Natural decline in cases and ScoMo reopening federal borders.

While Berejiklian may well have done something corrupt (I’ve no idea one way or the other), this probe is also politically motivated - ICAC loves getting conservative politicians - if she’d been Labor, this wouldn’t have happened.

The reality is if she hadn’t resigned, ICAC would have almost certainly wound up releasing a report in the middle of her next election campaign, completely derailing the campaign and probably assuring the reelection of a Labor government.

I think that’s why she’s gone so easily.

“Mr Perrottet had previously expressed frustration at the prospect of Australia becoming ‘a hermit kingdom’.”

I sure hope this guy wins the vote...he really seems to get it with, using the term “Hermit Kingdom”, which I’ve only seen used to describe North Korea.

Yea, we have the wife of an ex-president with a body count well into the 40s, with the latest being the reporter who caught her husband cutting a deal with the Attorney General (of the US) to keep her out of jail...so that she could run for president and (thankfully) lose.

Gladys Berejiklian - truly the face of the Western Matriarchy which has turned NSW into an utterly corrupt, fascist totalitarian state. The US should be hitting the Australians with economic sanctions the same way we do with North Korea, Iran or the former Burma
