Seattle school cancels Halloween over ‘equity,’ says Black kids don’t celebrate

A Seattle elementary school canceled Halloween activities over concerns about student equity and inclusion. Specifically, Seattle Public Schools says Black males do not celebrate and, more generally, students of color feel marginalized by the holiday. One parent, however, thinks this is an “exercise in affluent white vanity that is wokeism.”

Benjamin Franklin Day Elementary typically hosts Halloween festivities each year. They include a “Pumpkin Parade” where students wear costumes if they choose. But the school administration changed its focus to “foundational beliefs around equity for our students and families,” and, consequently, they’re canceling Halloween.

This year the only thing spooky and creepy is the school’s commitment to wokeness. What could be more equitable than having strangers give you free candy? Not to the school’s Racial Equity Team that decided with staff to gut Halloween.

The school delivered the ghoulish news in an October 8 newsletter to parents.

“As a school with foundational beliefs around equity for our students and families, we are moving away from our traditional ‘Pumpkin Parade’ event and requesting that students do not come to school in costumes,” the newsletter reads.

Even though the news will disappoint students, the newsletter says, the decision is meant to show respect for all B.F. Day students.

"Halloween events create a situation where some students must be excluded for their beliefs, financial status, or life experience. Costume parties often become an uncomfortable event for many children, and they distract students and staff from learning. Large events create changes in schedules with loud noise levels and crowds. Some students experience over stimulation, while others must deal with complex feelings of exclusion. It’s uncomfortable and upsetting for kids."

Nothing says equity quite like making every student miss out on the fun because some administrator invented a scenario where students feel excluded.

I don’t participate in gay pride events. Cancel them.

OK, so the principle is that if blacks don’t participate in it, it must go.

So then we eliminate:
Concerts. Opera. Nascar. Museums. Libraries.

“Halloween events create a situation where some students must be excluded for their beliefs, financial status, or life experience.”

That would be true of any holiday. Veterans Day, Labor Day, Martin Luther King Day, any of them. Perhaps we should prohibit all of them. Or maybe this person is saying that some beliefs, financial statuses and life experiences are more important than others. But that would make that person a bigot.

I was marginalized in Kindergarten because my mother cut out a cardboard mask of some cartoon character (I forget - it was too traumatic) and that was my mask for school. I kept it on all day because I was crying. Seems to me a small thing now but then it was horrible.

Some Christians who think it has satanic overtones would approve but for that reason and not the one given. If one wanted it back one could mention that and the woke would probably flip flop.

Black males do not celebrate

I live in an old neighborhood in Tulsa. Affluent, sidewalks. Great neighborhood. People always decorate for the holidays, and a popular Trick or Treat destination. They literally bus kids in from North Tulsa, which is predominatly Black. I buy 1,000 pieces of candy every year, and always run out and just shut down. I'd guess 80% are young Black kids.

Someone is always left out in most every situation such as this. Learning how to deal with it is developing a life skill.

I’m left out on black history month. White males don’t celebrate it, so we shouldn’t have it.

Tired of small sub groups continually being offended. I’m offended that the less than 1% keep preaching to me that we need to change the entirety of America so the rainbow alphabet crew can feel accepted.

From the article:

“Large events create changes in schedules with loud noise levels and crowds”

The same could be said for ANY holiday. They’ve already come after Christmas and Halloween. I expect Valentine’s Day will be canceled next because it is sexual harassment to send cards and candy or some such nonsense.

students of color feel marginalized by the holiday

So Kwanza is out, too, because no normal human being celebrates it? I'm sure they will find some leftist celebratory day to replace Halloween.

Very similar in my neighborhood. About a 50/50 population but the majority of kids are minorities dressed as teenagers.

“Teenagers” get the hard candy - cute little munchkins get the good stuff.

This is a good thing. . .it’s a satanic holiday where babies and adults are being sacrificed. I have a relative whose pastor was on a police task force that investigated human sacrifices in the state. . .this was quite a few years ago. It was sickening to learn of some of the cases

I was just thinking of the kid being raised in a charismatic christian home (like mine were). We did not do ‘Halloween’ for a few years, but would do Harvest Parties and the like at our churches and with our Bible Study groups. Not all the kids in such homes can be home schooled. And I am certain that my wife would NOT have signed onto a school Halloween party...

What we need is a holiday that celebrates something from Africa.

How about, The Lions Didn’t Eat Me Day?

We could balance that out with a European holiday like, The Plague Didn’t Get Me This Year Day.

Asians could celebrate, The Typhoon Blew Right On Past Me Day.

The Australians could celebrate…..well…..the Australians already celebrate everything.

KOOK white leftists once again speaking for black people. They do this because they think black people are unable to speak for themselves because they aren’t smart enough and need to be coddled.

Well, during slavery, slave children were not allowed to go Trick or Treating. So in the interests of "racial equity," they should allow the students to celebrate Hallowe'en and dress up in costumes, but only the black kids will get candy. That will help educate the white kids to understand and be remorseful over their unearned white privilege.

We always see black kids trick-or-treating on Halloween. I guess things are different in Seattle.
