Scheller, Marine who criticized Afghanistan withdrawal, pleads guilty to all charges in court-martial hearing

The U.S. Marine who posted videos on social media criticizing military leadership and the Biden administration’s withdrawal of military assets from Afghanistan pled guilty to all charges during a court-martial hearing at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on Thursday.

Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller Jr. has pled guilty to all six misdemeanor-level charges, including willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer, dereliction in the performance of duties and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.

Scheller was freed from the brig last week where he was being held for violating an agreement to stop posting criticism on social media.

The charges are all misdemeanors, perhaps he'll get lenient punishment but who knows?

And then there's a handful of FReepers who want him imprisoned for life for daring to criticize Trump.

I never ran afoul of the UCMJ during my stellar Army career so I can't claim any real credibility here. But it's hard to imagine that he,at the very least,won't be separated...perhaps even “under less than honorable conditions”...and will lose his pension.

When he appeared principled I was behind him 100%. When his unstable rantings came to light I felt he needed mental help. I don’t want to see him jailed. I do want to see him get mental help. He was right that military leadership is derelict. Blaming Trump for divisiveness when the very people who were pushing the divisiveness are the very same people who hung our troops out to dry is myopic at best and downright stupid at worst. The man lacks wisdom, judgement and vision. I understand his frustration but the instability is a deal breaker.

I was a Marine commissioned officer for 23 years and I served on three General Court-Martial boards and was the Convening Authority for four Summary Courts-Martial - and Assistant Defense Counsel for one Special Court-Martial.

Well he told the colonel judge his wife left him and his life was spiraling out of control when he said those things. He also lost a small business that put military pins on uniforms.

You lose some rights when you become a member of the Armed Forces. Perhaps you never served but in my day it was made clear that we could not participate any any political event nor could we be critical of civilian authority.

The military is under civilian control and I would not want it any other way.
