Majority of restaurant operators say business conditions are worse now than three months ago, survey finds(No....way...)

The trade group surveyed 4,000 operators between Sept. 7 and Sept. 15 and is using the results to lobby against President Joe Biden’s plan to raise the corporate tax rate and proposed changes to the National Labor Relations Act that would allow fines of $50,000 to $100,000 for labor violations. The association is also asking lawmakers to replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, which was created during the coronavirus pandemic to help keep the industry afloat.

Forty-five percent of survey respondents said that their locations weren’t open at full capacity for indoor dining.

Among those respondents, 83% said they are at least 10% understaffed, while 39% are missing more than a fifth of their needed workforce. In response to the issue, restaurateurs are cutting their hours, slashing menu items and reducing seating capacity, which can all impact their revenue.

Total food costs as a percentage of sales have also risen for 91% of operators compared with pre-pandemic levels, dragging down their margins.

I don’t imagine business will pick up after a lot of unvaccinated people lose their jobs. Less discretionary spending for dining out.

My favorite meal at a local place went from $19 in early 2020 to $28 last week.

We have seen our meal tabs go from 35-40 for both of us to $55-60 in a years time.

And these are not expensive places

to lobby against President Joe Biden’s plan

Its NOT China Joe Biden's plan. Its the plan of the Communists that have control of him and his government.

We may witness businesses opening for a total of 40 hours per week. It may be 9AM to 5PM Mon-Fri or Wed-Sun but it's likely coming. It will be one crew with no overtime.

It's like Communist Russia or Venezuela - long waits in line with few items on the shelf.

This is what happens when Socialist dump an economy for a power grab. They need to be frog-marched into a court they haven't bought off.

Three months ago was pre-Delta so things probably were better.

Well in July they started sending $300/kid/month in cash for “tax credits”, and then I think they have increased food stamps by 23%, and if your kids go to school, they are also getting 10-15 meals per week for free. So there is a lot more money available to people who used to work.

“Three months ago was pre-Delta so things probably were better.”

Three months ago there was no impending vax mandate.
Three months ago there was a bunch of “free money” still being handed out.

In our midwest town of 20,000, every restaurant has “hiring” signs in the window. Three local diners/pubs have cut out either lunch or dinner hours because they can’t find employees. One of our favorite places dropped their printed plastic menus and now hand out paper menus because they’ve had to raise their prices several times this year.

None of this surprises me. As a matter of principle I only eat out now at places where I know the owners.

The only exception I make is when I'm traveling, and I don't do as much of that as I used to before COVID.

I was listening to a St. Louis radio program a couple of days ago when they were lamenting the closing of several iconic restaurants downtown there. They just nonchalantly said that until the crime situation is cleaned up, this is just going to keep getting worse, nary a mention of corona.
