Apparently a fairly large number of such cases were solved with the advent of Google Satellite View. People would be looking at bodies of water near roadways, say “Hey, what’s that!? Looks like a car in there.”
And the next thing you know, a long-cold missing persons case is solved.

I personally knew a girl who drove straight into a river and was probably to high on something to get out, the water wasn’t completely over the top of the car it was spotted the next day.
It happened on a road that made a perfect Y one way took you into town the other was a boat ramp, it was clearly marked but after this the installed two or three speed bumps and so far it’s never happened again. That was 40yrs ago...

IIRC, a young couple disappeared while going to a nighttime party. I believe it was in the MidWest. The car was a Jeep-type four-wheeler and was pretty distinctive. They just flat out disappeared.
The authorities searched all the obvious ponds, lakes and streams and came up empty. Years later, a rancher was draining out a settling pond in the middle of nowhere and found the remains.
The only thing the authorities could come up with was that the guy, fully confident of his four-wheel drive, decided to take a shortcut across the field and ran into the pond.

I remember the sky being blue prior to 1956. Also the cartoon magazines my mother bought me.
Our 1953 Ford, though, was black and white so maybe color was invented sometime between 1953 and 1956.
