Spending $153, Edward Durr Ousts NJ Senate Leader Sweeney (it's official!)

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s longtime state Senate president, Democrat Steve Sweeney, has lost reelection, falling to a Republican newcomer who spent less than $200 on the race and leaving his party reeling.

Edward Durr, a furniture company truck driver and political newcomer, has defeated Sweeney in New Jersey’s 3rd Legislative District, according to results tallied Thursday.

Sweeney’s defeat was unexpected and threw his party’s legislative leadership contest into limbo on Wednesday, when he postponed a meeting set for Thursday. Sweeney had been expected to return as Senate president, but who’ll take over and what margin Democrats will have in the state Legislature is unclear.

Sweeney has served as Senate president since 2010 and was responsible for shepherding Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s progressive agenda through the Legislature, including a phased-in $15 an hour minimum wage, paid sick leave and recreational marijuana legalization.

This on par with Dave Brat taking out the US House Majority Leader in 2014.

Or Barry Goldwater taking out the US Senate Majority Leader in 1952.

This is way beyond either of those.

This is almost the equivalent of someone winning as a write-in candidate without even knowing that his friends and neighbors were writing in his name on their ballots.

“Democrat Steve Sweeney, has lost reelection, falling to a Republican newcomer who spent less than $200 on the race and leaving his party reeling.”

Yeah, I’ll bet the NJ GOP is also reeling from this victory.

“Hey! We didn’t say you could win that election!”

The downside of this is that the Democrats retain a majority in the NJ State Senate and Sweeney, as bad as he was, was something of a check on King Murphy.

Durr says he spent $10,000 which is still an amazingly small amount to unseat a forever Dem politician. His public records haven’t been updated yet.

If I had to guess, I'd say that Murphy's people were working behind the scenes to stick a knife in Sweeney's back.

Durr only takes over Sweeney’s Senate seat, not the position of President of the Senate.

Well, not exactly.

Sweeney may be a Democrat but he was a major obstacle to much of Phail Murphy's agenda. He had been around New Jersey government long before Murphy showed his ugly face, and knew the dangers of driving major employers out of the state with these fiscally irresponsible measures.

Sweeney’s ride on the gravy train has ended abruptly. Hope he made enough sweetheart deals while he could. /s

"Sweeney has served as Senate president since 2010 and was responsible for shepherding Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s progressive agenda through the Legislature."

This sentence seems to directly contradict what you said in your comment.

I wish him well. Hope he can endure the ‘long knives’ of both parties. Members of both parties are adept at stabbing someone in the back.

........I think Durr’s win was the most DIRECT and IMPACTFUL message to the marxist/communist Democratic Party (speaking of the National Party) arising out of Tuesday’s elections.

The sheer # of people voting for Durr, in a Democratic State like New Jersey, shows that MANY of them were Democrats themselves and that means TRUBBBBBBBBBBBLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEE in 2024.

One of the great sub stories is that just over half of that money was spent on those who worked with him for an outing at Dunkin’ Donuts.

Pass a law that allows all future candidates to only spend $153.00 on their campaign. No free advertising from news agencies. Only debates with written pertinent questions. Let them run on their records or their stands on issues.
