Danish PM Denies She New Order for Mink Kill Was Not Legally Valid

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, facing a probe over the slaughter of the country's entire mink herd last year, on Wednesday (Nov 3) denied that she knew then that the government did not have legal authority to order the move.

Responding to the rising spread of coronavirus from mink to people, including a new mutated strain, Frederiksen's Social Democratic government in November 2021 ordered all of the country's 17 million minks killed.

More from AsiaOne Read the condensed version of this story, and other top stories with NewsLite. The government later admitted it did not have the legal authority to kill healthy mink herds, only those infected with coronavirus, leading to the exit of the minister of agriculture.

Parliament launched a probe in December into whether other ministers including Frederiksen knew of but ignored the faulty legal basis for the order.

"What motive should the government have had for not disclosing the lack of legal basis? Let me make it very clear: I did not know," Frederiksen told a press briefing, offering her most detailed defence so far.

Prior to the slaughter, which left the industry in ruins, Denmark was the world's largest producer of high-quality mink skins, coveted in the fashion industry for their silky-soft character.

Opposition lawmakers have accused the prime minister of deliberately working against the probe.

Investigators wanted to review text messages sent by Frederiksen and officials in her office but said they had been deleted because the officials set their phones to erase texts after 30 days. The Justice Ministry is working with police to recover the messages.

"Will those text messages show anything new about my knowledge of the lack of legal basis? No, they will not," Frederiksen said.

That probe, which will put Frederiksen on the stand on Dec 9, is set to present its conclusion in April.

I assume it flooded the market with pelts....

Nope.

You have to harvest when the pelts are at peak which is not when they were killed and you have killed off all the breeding stock.

These were not wild mink but carefully bred for color, size, coat thickness and other things that make a pelt worth more.

But sure, no harm done.

Same as when the Germans killed all the Alderneys and wiped out the breed.

No loss at all.

I assume it flooded the market with pelts....

... COVID-infested pelts.

Mink are not dogs or horses

What is the relevance of this obvious statement of fact? Minks are not dogs or horses, therefore... ? What?

The many members of Denmark's Holy Order of Contemplative Monks are just relieved that a single letter in the order was not mistyped!

I think minks aren’t so nice...didn’t have a problem with mink coats back in the day. Can’t wear now of course... nor do I need to... but they were beautiful.

In before peta types

I have no truck harvesting their fur....but do it humanely

I am not keen on killing dogs and horses....Faucis beagles come to mind

Anti fur folks often bring up pets to bolster anti fur diatribes

Shame they had to kill 17 million and yes I assume it flooded the fur market...a market I know a little about...very tightly controlled ashkenazi Jewish biz

I’m listening to old Boz Skaggs Loan Me a Dime....Duane Allman ..on lead guitar ...it’s perfection ....got distracted and disjointed in my sentence order

I can see why it was confusing

I can see why it was confusing

So what you meant to say was:

While minks are not horses or dogs, they nonetheless deserve to be put to death humanely, right?

I believe he meant to imply that they should not take up arms for the sake of the mink, whereas they should for dogs or horses.

At any rate, it was most likely [and literally] overkill.

The individual pelts could be sanitized and then turned into high end golf club head covers and classic car duster mitts for the guys and nice warm fuzzy bikinis and slippers for the gals. However, “Code Mink” protesters now have millions of martyred mink to hail and there will soon be a new memorial wall with aroma therapy technology going up in Eugene, OR. The whole world is watching!...

The entire western world is run by the dumbest people imaginable. They don’t seem to comprehend the cost for any action they take.

I did not know about the “Alderneys”.

Had to look it up. That was a loss.

“Killing has been mankind’s solution to many problems throughout the ages.”

At times justified. Many times not.
