Our county doesn’t test for variants. Our upside in cases was “assumed “ to be the delta variant. Not the Lambdo variant, (even though we have allowed 2 million illegal aliens loose in the USA., without testing).

Did they do individuals like that with Delta? Usually, or always (as I understood it), they sent a batch of PCR positives to a separate lab and ran the special test there, not attached to individuals.
Is this a different Covidian strategy playing out? If so, guess why.
