MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The owner of a bar in Albert Lea was found guilty Thursday of six criminal misdemeanor charges and sentenced to 90 days in jail for defying Gov. Tim Walz’s executive orders to close her business last winter.
The jury found Lisa Hanson, 57, guilty after deliberating for an hour, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported. Prosecutors had asked that Hanson be fined $500 and jailed for several days, but Judge Joseph Bueltel gave her a 90-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine, saying he wanted to send a message to people who violate executive orders.
“You wanted to make money over the interest of public safety,” Bueltel told Hanson. “You don’t recognize the law. You don’t think you’re subject to the law.”
“Liberty and freedom,” Hanson shouted as she was taken into custody by a sheriff’s deputy.
Hanson has also been hit with fines totaling over $27,000 from separate legal actions brought after she left the state while facing the charges. Her business, The Interchange, closed in February.

How can you be guilty of a non-crime?
I hope his gets appealed.
And ‘executive order’ only applies to the people who WORK FOR the executive - not private companies.
Take this to the supreme court. I’ll donate to the fees.
Burn down buildings. Go free
Open your building to the public, go to jail.
This poor woman is a political dissident

This is grounds for a mistrial. A judge getting personal and calling an executive order “law” is not good for the subjects under jurisdiction. Also, the fact that he dramatically increased the penalty that the proscutor asked for.
These people are screwed.
“...he wanted to send a message to people who violate executive orders.”
Translation: Fascism rising.
Disgusting! Shame on everyone involved with this farce on Justice.

I hate executive orders, no matter who issues them. It’s a king-like power that should only be used in true time-sensitive emergencies. Otherwise, let the legislatures make the rules.
And Covid was not a time-sensitive emergency. Hours did not matter.
I would be willing to bet the state couldn’t track one case, hospitalization, or desk to the bar being open.
respect my Authoritaay...
“Public safety.” Gimme a freakin’ break, tyrants.
open your bar...go to jail
burn down a bar, you’re free to go
nice to see MN has their priorities in order
The process is the punishment
Tar and feather the judge and the gov.
...the illegal diktat is repugnant to the Constitution and as such is null and void.
The Judge: We are the government - You are S**T

[apropos of nothing, two time travelers from the future were heard laughing about something] "...and then get this, they switched the heads on the bodies."
from the star-tribune:
“...[Judge] Bueltel then told the jurors they must follow the rules of law, even if they don’t agree with them... “
That’s a lie. If the jurors said simply ‘not guilty’, what’s the judge going to do - send them to jail?
We need a better way to inform possible jurors about this since a lot more cases like these are probably going to court.
just my $0.02
