I just read a great book on this called the Nixon Conspiracy - by Geoff Shepard.
Nixon had nothing to do with the break-in - he may have tried to cover it up - but even that’s debatable. He just had too many enemies, like Trump.
It was those idiots Gordon Liddy and Howard Hunt - they were told more than once by Dean NOT to do it. They kept trying to get Dean to get approval from the higher ups and then there was a communications mix up where Dean gave mixed signals.
Dean told Liddy something to the effect that he had been told not to bring it up again - that Mitchell and Elrichman didn’t want to hear about it.
Liddy thought they were speaking in code - and thought he was being told to go ahead but they wanted plausible deniability. As it turned out, Liddy was wrong - they had not approved the break in.
So it was really Dean’s fault for not being clear enough, and Liddy’s fault for being an idiot.
After they got caught breaking in, there was a long period of time where they were trying to manage the fall-out and distance Nixon from it.
The problem was that Dean was going to be implicated one way or another - and he decided to save himself by being a whistleblower - I think everything he said to implicate Nixon, Mitchel and Elrichman was a lie.
Nixon’s enemies wanted to get him so bad that they cut a deal with Dean.
