NY Mayor Elect Eric Adams postpones inauguration to after Shabbat

Eric Adams will delay his public inauguration ceremony by several hours on Saturday, Jan.1, to accommodate his Jewish supporters, the Forward reported Tuesday.

Traditionally, the inauguration of New York City’s elected officials takes place on Jan. 1 at noon. This year, Jan. 1 is a Saturday, meaning the midday ceremony would be happening on Shabbat, when observant Jews typically do not travel.

Adams decided to shift the ceremony until later in the evening after Shabbat ends so his observant Jewish supporters could attend.

Good idea—stick it to the Anti-Semites out there.

It’s hypothetical, of course. Ramadan doesn’t fall out in December or January this year. Besides, the supporters could attend even during Ramadan. They’d just be in a crappy mood for fasting. For that matter, Shabbat observers could attend just by walking to City Hall. If they live in Brooklyn, they could walk the Brooklyn Bridge. That’s always a thrill. If they live in Queens, I’m not sure there’s a pedestrian walkway across the 59th Street, and that’s a pretty formidable schlep besides. If they live in Staten Island or the Bronx, they’re out of luck.

Good on soon-to-be-Mayor Adams. Delaying the inauguration for 5-6 hours hurts no one and I’m sure his Jewish constituents will appreciate the gesture.

More Jewish people live in NYS than in any other state in the Union - and a lot of those 2 million, are in NYC. He knows his population.

I don’t trust that new politician’s words anymore than the old politician.

Watch his actions, not his words or intentions.

Let’s see if he’s really going to get tough on crime by making meaningful reforms. I will doubt it until otherwise.

Agreed. The ceremony is not what’s important.

He’s a former cop. That might make a difference in perspective.

Muslims observe on Fridays, Jews on Saturdays and Christians on Sundays. I don’t know what day Rastafarians consider holy.

Do it privately ON TIME...and have another ceremony. If it’s good enough for Obama, it’s good enough for Eric.

You make dark and it is night.
Wherein all the beasts of the forest creep forth.
The lions roar after their prey.
And seek their meat from God

When the sun rises, they retire and couch in their dens.

And man goes forth to his work. And to his labor until the evening..

How manifold are your Works!

The bible readers at that ceremony should take heed that the animals not in cages in NYC can get you at anytime.
But night is when it’s their time..

Paraphrased from Psalm 104

I would agree with you, as long as the date is moved UP before the Sabbath, rather than afterward as he wants.

Louis Rossmann from Youtube used to live-stream ride home on an E-Bike thru that area. He would hit 20 mph on the bridge walkway if there was no one around.

Warren von Wilhelm’s term expires at noon on the first of January. After that he will no longer be the mayor even if Eric Adams is not inaugurated until hours or even days later. In the interim, the office of the mayor would be vacant.

Only a small minority of that NYC Jewish population grounds itself for the Sabbath.

I guess the average non-Jew politician in NYC (or his staff) might.

As for the Mayoral term, I think it expires at midnight, New Mayor can’t exercise powers though until sworn in, I think they do it privately at midnight and the ceremony later is just for show.

I hope he’s equally considerate in not forcing Orthodox Jews to vaccinate if they don’t want to.

Ramadan won’t occur in early January for at least ten years.

Sabbath observant Jews were among Adams’ earliest and strongest supporters. He may be doing this for a couple of big donors only.

Actually, Ramadan in late December or early January would have the shortest fast duration at least in the northern hemisphere.
