India Experiences Buyers Remorse Over Russian Weapons

Gere's What You Need to Remember: Ideological and financial concerns mean there are a lot of things India won’t buy from the United States or Europe, leaving Russia as their sole source of weapons.

Like a lot of countries, India wants the best weapons it can afford. But ideological and financial concerns mean there are a lot of things it won’t buy from the United States or Europe. That pretty much leaves, well, Russia.

India has been a big buyer of Russian weapons for 50 years. Those haven’t been easy years for New Delhi. India’s defense contracts with Russia have consistently suffered delays and cost overruns. And the resulting hardware doesn’t always work.

Of all India’s Russian procurement woes, none speak more to the dysfunctional relationship between the two countries than the saga of INS Vikramaditya. In the early 2000s, India went shopping for a new aircraft carrier. What followed was a military-industrial nightmare.

I wouldn’t mind having a T-34.

India buys Russian weapons, pays too much and continues to buy even if they do not work because Indian officials are embezzling huge amounts or getting huge kickbacks from the Russians (who are doing the same on their end).

The Indian military get too few, crappy weapons and Russian firms get a fraction of the money spent.

You could say the same about many US procurement contracts, only in their case the ROI on lobbying and revolving-door jobs is an order of magnitude higher.

Look at ULA and Boeing, which have received billions over a decade for new spacecraft and have yet to launch a single one successfully.

The US repeatedly sided with Pakistan practically driving the Indians and Soviets together. There were so many missed opportunities it was almost as if the US had a bunch of anti-India people in high office. We can hardly blame India. Aside from the fact we were almost always on Pakistan’s side, India refused to join the American led order and that wasn’t allowed.

Even if we had sold the Indians hardware it would have come with so many restrictions it would hardly be worth it.

Also, if you buy US stuff the US will expect you to do whatever they want or, no spares, no support and we’ll just impound the undelivered hardware without refunding any money...so there!

If I was running a country, I’d look askance at any chance to buy US hardware. (Incidentally, I spent 33 years working for the producers or that hardware and about 25% of the time we ended up delivering it to a US buyer instead because we’d gotten a new president or the original buyer had done something the state department didn’t like.)

I would settle for a Krinkov rifle, er, pistol! And a box car of ammo!

I’m not hard to please!

Stupid propaganda. Vikramaditya was an extensive refit of a derelict hull made into a radically different ship than it was from the beginning. The Indians picked a submarine shipyard to do the job, without experience in large surface ships hence the overruns on time and budget. All the technical problems it experienced were related to non-standard equipment, stipulated by the Indian standards. The problems are long-solved though.

There is a slight positive. The Chicoms know bought weapons can be used against them.

“India Experiences Buyers Remorse Over Russian Weapons”

This is nothing new. The stupid ChiComms are still trying float an aircraft carrier they bought from Russia. So the 50-IQ ChiComms built their own carriers, and they don’t float either.

India just bought & deployed the Russian S-400 anti-air system, the best in the world.

You really are an all purpose Russkie troll. You’re even an expert on this obscure, shitty Russian aircraft carrier!

Thanks to you, I don’t have to know anything about it to conclude that the article is 100% accurate!

China is full of slaves that try to reverse engineer what the white man has created.

LOL, I saw this and the only thought I had was...that damn aircraft carrier they bought. What a lemon.

Russian aviation hardware looks nice, don’t know how it performs, just stopped following it a while back. I guess I felt they were building it less for national defense and more for generating hard currency income.

I have Aviation Week & Space Technology that I have had a subscription for years, but it has become so woke and China/Euro ass-licking that I couldn’t stomach it anymore and stopped my subscription.

They keep sending it, though. Their loss.

“The sick man of the east lives on...”

In country sources reported that the Chinese moms were deeply upset when the bodies of their first and only sons were stacked like cordwood at Ladakh in the summer of 2020 after the Indian Army Gurkhas chopped them to pieces.

The future of China is pissed-off moms.

There are things the Russians do very well indeed. Aircraft carriers aren't one of them. Case in point - Admiral Kuznetsov. Russia's other aircraft carriers are much better except that there aren't any of them.
