Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has announced effective midnight Tuesday, the province’s COVID-19 vaccine passport program will end.
At an evening news conference, Kenney said the restriction exemption program has served its purpose, but is no longer needed since Alberta passed peak of Omicron infections about three weeks ago.
“The threat of COVID-19 to public health no longer outweighs the hugely damaging impact of health restrictions on our society,” said Kenney, adding his government would only move forward if it does not threaten the capacity of the health-care system.
Capacity limits will also be nixed Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. for venues with capacity limits under 500, including libraries and places of worship.
Effective Sunday at 11:59 p.m., the province will no longer require masking for children and youth in schools, and for Albertans aged 12 and under in any setting.
The target date for the second phase of the government’s plan is March 1, when the province plans to remove remaining restrictions, including the indoor mask mandate, work from home requirements, remaining capacity limits, limits on social gatherings, and screening for youth activities. The timing of the third phase is still up in the air, but the government said it will eventually include removing COVID-19 measures in continuing care.
“I very much hope that today’s long-awaited announcement gives a sense of optimism,” said Kenney, acknowledging that many Albertans will say the government’s plan moves too fast.
“We are well positioned to live with this virus, as we do with many other infectious diseases,” said Kenney.

"Capacity limits will end Tuesday at 11:59 p.m."Can there be ANY justification for future dates and staggered dates? Why not just say "Capacity limits and masking of children ends as of RIGHT NOW!" or "Tonight at midnight"?

That’s exactly right. A snippet on the news but not the whole story. He talked of bringing back the vax card. All politicians are like heroin addicts, their thirst for power and control could likely end in their demise.
My Bible teaches me to forgive, but it doesn't say we should also FORGET! Sorry Oberführer Kenney. As long as you remain in Alberta politics, a party LED by you, or HAVING YOU as a leader, or even a MEMBER, will NOT get my vote!
DROPPING ALL CHARGES AGAINST ALL PASTORS in connection with the CCP-Coronavirus CONdemic AND APOLOGIZING to EACH PASTOR, and WRITTEN COPIES at EACH CHURCH, would go some way to recouping SOME credibility. Else wise, GO BACK TO ONTARIO, WHERE YOU BELONG!

I’m in Edmonton. I take casual work from a private company, when I have the time. Working for them is whenever I have an open schedule.
I want to go skiing in Alberta but Canada requires 1) proof of vaccination 2) negative covid test within 72 hours prior (and not the cheap quick test) 3) you can be randomly selected to take a covid test at the border and must show where you will quarantine if you are positive.
The truckers at the blockade are not happy with what Mr. Kenney had to say. He can bring back the vax passports, private business can still use them, he talks annual COVID shots in his statement.
The vaccine mandate for government employees remains in place.
They want a permanent end to all mandates.
