• Currently, drug traffickers take a gamble when they smuggle illegal narcotics into the U.S. with just 25 out of 500 vehicles per hour being searched
•Agency is preparing to roll out new 'nonintrusive' inspection systems to screen significantly more trucks
•Powerful high-energy scanners will detect 'anomalies' inside cargo loads
•'Multi-energy portals' will zap the cargo areas with high-energy waves, but use safer low-energy screening for the cab, allowing the drivers to remain inside
•Machines can scan eight times as many trucks per hour as the existing high-energy systems

I drive thru these things almost daily for years now. Radiation detector is the first portal, and x-ray is next.
Doubly sucks for me because nearly all of the propane I haul in from BC is radioactive, requiring an additional scan.
From the way they describe it, it seems like they’re using X-rays, not just something “the same lines” as X-rays. Not exactly harmless.

It’s actually more of a flouroscope- they claim that the unit runs at low power until it sees the gap between the cab and trailer, and switches to high power mode.
I overheard them talking about the amazing details the new machines show.
If a driver refuses the scan, then their cab gets searched manually.
It used to be that they x-rayed our rigs with us out of the vehicle.
A magic tractor beam.
