SEN. SUSAN COLLINS: Reform the Electoral Count Act to Avoid Another January 6
New York Times ^ | Feb 18 | Sen. Susan Collins

Posted on 02/18/2022 4:41:47 AM PST by RandFan

Think about my shock when on Jan. 6, 2017, I came upon that I had obtained one electoral vote to be vice chairman of the USA — an workplace for which I used to be not a candidate — from a “faithless elector” from the state of Washington.

4 years later, on Jan. 6, 2021, when a violent mob overran the Capitol, I noticed that my unearned vote within the Electoral School was not amusing. This seemingly innocuous vote was a sign that our system of counting and certifying votes for president and vice chairman had deep and severe structural issues.

These unlucky flaws are codified within the Electoral Depend Act, which guides the implementation of a part of the presidential election course of included within the Structure. This 1887 legislation, vaguely written within the inaccessible language of a unique period, was supposed to restrain Congress, however in observe it has had the unintended impact of making ambiguities that would doubtlessly be used to increase the function of Congress and the vice chairman in methods which might be opposite to the Structure.

Regardless of its defects, the legislation was not a difficulty for greater than a century due to the restraint of the individuals who exercised the intense, however restricted, constitutional duty of counting the votes. Vice presidents and Congresses sustained the desire of the folks — even when they didn’t just like the outcome.

For instance, we noticed this in 1961 and once more in 2001, when Vice Presidents Richard Nixon and Al Gore presided in a good and dignified method over the counting of the electoral votes regardless of having misplaced shut elections for president. Vice President Gore even refused to listen to Democratic objectors who had been making an attempt to make him president.

I would modify it to the Nebraska-Maine EV- every congressional district gets its own Electoral Vote. the one who wins the most in the State gets those two EV’s.

The thing that enrages me the most...by far...in the stolen election matter is that not a single court in this nation...state,Federal or even SCOTUS itself...spent a single millisecond examining the merits of the case.

In fact, given its ruling in January of last year,SCOTUS...the highest court in the land...made it clear that there are no rules when it comes to Presidential elections.

We can be damn sure that Rat Party Headquarters got the message that SCOUTUS was sending.

“had obtained one electoral vote to be vice chairman of the USA — an workplace for which I used to be not a candidate”

Why does this read like it has been Google Translated from Armenian?

Wow - she rambles terribly!

It appears she wants to eliminate the potential for faithless electors. This, of course, could also mean that a dead person, having won the election and subsequently passed, could be elected (assuming the law doesn’t account for such).

The founders left the possibility of faithless electors in for a reason. They deliberately diminished the legislature’s authority in this area. Her rambling diatribe notwithstanding, what has invalidated those reasons for the founders to have constructed the ambiguous rules?

I have not yet found many such rules from the founding fathers that have been overcome by anything except the ambitions of unscrupulous men and women.

If Susan Collins actually wrote this, she is near incompetent.

Yeah it’s hilarious... I couldn’t be bothered correcting every phrase.

The NYT is practically completely closed. A stupid way to run a news site in my opinion

I hate the people who vote for her and give her political power.

Please think about that.

Maine has RCV.

She is the reason Maine has RCV.

Collins ain’t going anywhere until Deep State wants her gone...

Or until Mainers repeal RCV and go back to dumb voting machines.

It’s not a news site.

It’s a propaganda outlet for Deep State.

Different business model.
