All eyes on Trump as Timken gains momentum in Ohio (if Portman wants Timken, that means McConnell wants Timken)

hio Sen. Rob Portman’s (R ) endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Jane Timken could alter the dynamics of the state’s crowded GOP primary and give Timken a needed boost.

Portman, who is retiring next year, on Wednesday offered Timken the race’s most high-profile endorsement to date. Timken will likely get access to the senator’s vast donor network and campaign apparatus in the state, where Portman is popular. Timken’s campaign said it raised $250,000 in the 24 hours after Portman endorsed her.

“This is the most significant thing that has happened in the Senate race. Period. End of discussion,” said one Republican operative involved in Ohio politics.

Some strategists are also asking if Portman’s endorsement could foreshadow a potential endorsement from former President Trump.

“That is the hottest rumor in Ohio right now,” state Sen. Michael Rulli (R ), who has endorsed Timken, said. “If that happens, in my humble opinion, Jane would lock it up.”

While Trump has yet to give any indicator of who he will endorse in the primary, many of the candidates have heavily vied for the former president’s nod in the state he carried in 2016 and 2020.

“The 800-pound gorilla in this thing is going to be the Trump endorsement,” said one Ohio-based GOP strategist. “That will change dramatically whatever this race is currently. There are some folks that absolutely need that endorsement, there are other folks that may not think they need it.”

We might as well start calling her Jane McRomBush.

That’s how we can describe McConnell’s preferred candidates.

This article: BS or not? Gibbons/Vance could dilute the vote to where she slips in and WE end up rooting for her.

For whatever it’s worth, Rand likes Gibbons.

That may be true, under the “any republican is better than the democrat” rule.

But if she’s squishy, she’ll be conservative until she is safely reelected. Then she’ll be as if Mike DeWine is back in the Senate.

Trump originally wanted to endorse Timken.

Do any Ohio locals have an honest objective read on Timken?

Kellyanne Conway’s joining Timken speaks well for her, imho.

That’s where WE come in. Since when does one 6 year term guarantee another? It’s vigilance. Vigilance means nothing without challengers willing to step up and disturb the excrement. Look at Cassidy in La. Linda in SC. Now we’re gonna do the same thing with Thune.

I'm a GOP County Chairman in Ohio. Jane Timken was only elected Ohio GOP Chairman at Trump's direct insistence; he called many Chairmen around Ohio to lobby for her. I believe he will endorse her in the Senate race as well. Kellyanne Conway, still working with Trump, has joined her campaign as an adviser. Jane is tough, a hard worker, a suberb organizer, but most importantly, a true conservative, certainly to the right of Portman. She'll be a loyal Trump supporter if he's the 2024 nominee, too. I think she's the best candidate to go up against Tim Ryan.

My take on the rest of the field: Gibbons is excellent, and my second choice; Vance is prepping a 2024 run, and has lost momentum; Dolan is a moderate but spending tons of money, so viable but not the winner; Mandel is a weak campaigner and has skeletons in his closet that could doom him in the General Election.

If Trump endorses, and I think he will, his pick wins. I think that will be Timken.

Big swamp vibe from her. I’m voting JD Vance in the primary. If he doesn’t make it, I’m not voting.

Vance in ‘24 vs. Sherrod Brown. He’s got time but he has to impress. James in Michigan-his 3rd attempt will be for a house seat. Timken got a lot of bad vibes on this site. So did Sinema in Az. You know. She was a radical communist. Didn’t turn out so bad. Everything here needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I’m reading P.J. O’rouke’s book on 2016. Love him but he didn’t like Trump so there you have it.

Vance is an opportunistic former never Trumper who was mocking Trump supporters not long ago.

I could easily vote for Gibbons. If Trump endorses Timken, I will vote for her. I do believe whomever Trump endorses, that candidate will win.

Josh Mandel Ohio Establishment Republican and Club for Growth candidate, pass. J D Vance appearances on Tucker Carlson and pushing himself as Pro Trump until his fraud was exposed, pass. Jane Timken blanketing the airways with a lot of ad buys claiming to be Pro Trump but where is the money for her campaign coming from and whose pocket is she in? I am suspicious and feel it’s another bought and paid for Chamber of Commerce Republican trying to fool the rubes to get in and vote the McConnell way. No thanks! Gibbons solid conservative and the only real choice, we’re finally getting rid of Portman I hope Ohio Republican voters don’t waste this opportunity!

If Trump endorses Timken, I’ll finally be convinced that he just cannot judge people, which is the most important factor in making a effective leader.
