Explainer: Critical Race Theory, what it is, what it isn’t, and why it’s become a buzzword (Virginia)

As the national debate about Critical Race Theory unfolds, questions continue to circulate about the college-level concept.

10 On Your Side sat down with William & Mary Law School Professor Vivian Hamilton, who is also the director of the school’s center for social justice, to answer some common questions about CRT.

Hamilton teaches a unit on CRT in a class covering race and law at William & Mary. She said CRT isn’t taught in Virginia’s K-12 public schools and that most college students don’t learn about it unless they are in specialized courses.

What is Critical Race Theory?

Critical Race Theory developed in law schools in the 1980s and continues to be studied in highly-specialized settings.

“It’s a body of principles that aims to understand why Black people and other people of color continue to occupy the bottom-most social rungs of society,” Hamilton said.

She said CRT also studies how racial disparities came about and how they are perpetuated in American society. One core principle of CRT is the belief that race is a social construct, meaning there are no biological determinations to race.

“Another core principle is that institutions can create and perpetuate racial disparities even with the absence of racist intent on the part of the individuals who are part of those institutions,” she said.

Hamilton said examples of these disparities can be found in government housing policy, employment, and school funding.

They're still pushing Critical Race Theory in Virginia, even after Nicole Wallace insisted CRT isn't real:

Townhall Twitter

Now, John Oliver, a TV comic with heaven knows how many liberal writers, sets the record straight. Critical Race Theory isn't the problem. Conservatives who oppose Critical Race Theory are the problem.

CRT is the new Marxist Critical Theory. Originally they wanted the working class to revolt but in the US the working class had it too good. Now they focus on race and relabel it CRT.

Reminds me of Ralph Cifaretto on Sopranos when he and Tony were being told of HUD :” I swear there’s a program for every one of these deadbeats in America”.

CRT. It’s an application of Vanguardism, detailed by Lenin his 1902 essay “What Is To Be Done.” Basically it’s the view that the oppressed are too crushed down by their oppression to realize that they’re oppressed, so they must be led by a “vanguard” of enlightened intellectuals who understand things

That was CT. Now it is C-RACE-T.

“Hamilton said examples of these disparities can be found in government housing policy, employment, and school funding.”

There are disparities. There are always disparities. There have always been disparities.

The false assumption of CRT is *only racism* can account for the disparities.

There are numerous potential and reasonable reasons to account for the disparities, from cultural reasons to genetic and religious reasons.

One of the biggest failures of CRT is to refuse to look at disparities in other countries, other than through the self fulfilling lens of CRT.

It is not hard to bend statistics and fact to your preferred narrative, when your narrative is that anything which contradicts your narrative is racist, by definition.

I highly recommend Human Diversity by Charles Murray.

CRT summarized: only whites are innately racist. When they came to the new world they found Native Americans holding hands and singing, not enslaving and committing genocide, not enslaving other tribes, etc, but the lands instead were full of unicorns and rainbows.

CRT: before whites there was no mass enslaving of blacks by Muslims and no invasions of Christian lands by Muslims from the 8th century on.

CRT: numerous African tribes did not mass enslave, weren’t involved heavily in the slave trade, and everything since then is whites trying to hold everyone else down.

CRT: if there are differences in outcome it’s always whiteys fault, and it’s wayyycist to say otherwise.

The science indicates there are biological differences by race and sex that are not explained by any other variables or combination of variables. CRT wishes that away.

Hamilton is just gaslighting.

My first questions would be to ask why actual Africans that come to America and Vietnamese that came here are wildly successful.

I think that blows the whole theory to pieces.

Yes, of course. But CRT holds than any evidence against CRT, including the scientific method, math, and technology, is racist.

Exactly. Communism works out so well for the elites because they build up the victimology of any downtrodden, poor people. Get them ready to supposedly fight for pure equality. Which can’t exist in reality. And to attempt it, you need a cadre of perfect angels to distribute the goods fairly. No angels around here. But, guess what, THE SAME ELITES TELLING YOU TO GET WHAT’S FAIR AND YOURS ARE THE ONES WHO WILL BE DISTRIBUTING SAID FAIRNESS!!! What amazing altruism. Or do they have a vested interest in a weak populace with their hands out and mouths open??

They see people who are working themselves into a lather in 2022 convinced people are against them simply because of skin color, and sadly that righteous misplaced anger makes them perfect potential serfs. Please don’t fall for it. Skin color doesn’t have that much effect on your success today; leave these theories and just live your own life. You’re being fooled.

Ah... yes, clever.

A theory which presents that any evidence disproving the theory actually proves the theory.

Who comes up with this, 7 yr olds?

And the DoD and companies just suck this stuff up. Maddening.

“There are numerous potential and reasonable reasons to account for the disparities, from cultural reasons to genetic and religious reasons.”

Yes, as we conservatives look at the logical side. Unlike whitey-hating liberal ghetto animals who dont want to look themselves at the mirror why they fail, there are factors outside racism as the culprit.

“It’s a body of principles that aims to understand why Black people and other people of color continue to occupy the bottom-most social rungs of society,”

If this is what CRT was really looking for, I don’t think I’d have a problem with it. Why do black people consistently find themselves at the bottom? That’s a question that should be asked. Trouble is, CRT isn’t really looking for an answer that might even hint that a big part of black peoples’ problems come from black people themselves, not the rest of society.

African blacks, with some exceptions, seem to do better in this supposedly ‘racist’ nation then American blacks who were born here. And then there are all of the Asian ‘people of color’ who seem to manage to excel here in America.

CRT basically tries to lay the blame for black Americans’ failures on white people.
