In a televised address Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said his "special military operation" would seek the "demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine."
Putin's comments refer to the Kremlin's allegation that Ukraine's military is run by neo-Nazis and is a threat to Russia, The New York Times reported.
The goal "will be to defend people who for eight years are suffering persecution and genocide by the Kyiv regime," Putin said. "For this we will aim for demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as taking to court those who carried out multiple bloody crimes against civilians, including citizens of the Russian Federation."

De nazification in a Russian’s eyes is implementing Communism, particularly Stalinism.

There are literal Neo-Nazi militias in Ukraine. They are pretty well-armed. How and where they got their weapons makes things really complicated and uncomfortable for our two most favoritest countries. So, there are actual “Nazis”, AND Putin gets to troll the Western media by saying he’s fighting against Nazis.
It helps that Putin is accurate, the conglomeration that is Ukraine is historically and currently considerably Nazi, there's no getting around it.

It saw its first combat experience recapturing Mariupol from pro-Russian separatists forces in June 2014. Azov initially formed as a volunteer militia on 5 May 2014 during the Ukrainian crisis. On 12 November 2014, Azov was incorporated into the National Guard of Ukraine, and since then all members are contract soldiers serving in the National Guard of Ukraine.
