The Russian tanks and missiles besieging Ukraine also are threatening the food supply and livelihoods of people in Europe, Africa and Asia who rely on the vast, fertile farmlands of the Black Sea region — known as the “breadbasket of the world.” Ukrainian farmers have been forced to neglect their fields as millions flee, fight or try to stay alive. Ports are shut down that send wheat and other food staples worldwide to be made into bread, noodles and animal feed. And there are worries Russia, another agricultural powerhouse, could have its grain exports upended by Western sanctions. While there have not yet been global disruptions to wheat supplies, prices have surged 55% since a week before the invasion amid concerns about what could happen next. If the war is prolonged, countries that rely on affordable wheat exports from Ukraine could face shortages starting in July, International Grains Council director Arnaud Petit told The Associated Press. That could create food insecurity and throw more people into poverty in places like Egypt and Lebanon, where diets are dominated by government-subsidized bread. In Europe, officials are preparing for potential shortages of products from Ukraine and increased prices for livestock feed that could mean more expensive meat and dairy if farmers are forced to pass along costs to customers.

Ukraine is the “Breadbasket of Europe”. The United States is the “Breadbasket of the World”
And how does this affect us? Like fuel, why an increase in price since we don’t really buy any from Russia or Ukraine. This is fearmongering-driven price inflation.
Just wait until our greatest enemies (Biden and the Dimbulbcrats) give our grain to all, and tell us that it will improve our health.
Not even close to kidding.
Yes, they are THAT corrupt.
They make China appear as a close friend.
Heck of price to pay for refusing to be a neutral Ukraine (not in NATO) and to stop shelling the Donbas.
“The Russian tanks and missiles besieging Ukraine also are threatening the food supply and livelihoods of people in Europe, Africa and Asia who rely on the vast, fertile farmlands of the Black Sea region”
It will affect us as we will have greater exports for food due to supply issues from Ukraine and Russia to Europe and other localities which will drive our prices up.
Ya , the US and Canada grow no Grain ,D’oh
even the UK growns guess what Grain
And Rhodesia used to feed all of Africa! Used to.
And look at the writers names. Are those common in Kentucky?
Actually it does. It is not enough for Putin to have its oil to fund his conquests but now it wants the wheat of Ukraine. And the more it can sell to increase its threat to the free world the less US farmer may. Besides Canada and Mexico, China and the EuroUnion are big customers.
The US wont that without fertilizer, Russia is the top exporter of that.
While it is true that Ukraine and Russian harvests will be lower than usual, that is not the only problem. Due to less availability of natural gas fertilizer production is down and fertilizer is much more expensive. This has especially affected crop yields in South America. Due to very heavy rains China announced its winter wheat yield will be down by more than 20%. Shortages, energy curtailments, inflation will not only diminish supplies but the increased prices will make food inaccessible for poor people around the war. If there is a natural or weather disaster in India or China, real famine would be likely. Social, political and economic disorder will follow. There will be more wars.
Yes we will be forced to give our grain away to the 3rd world and then buy Russian grain to replace it so we can eat.
Our farmers buy fertilizer to grow crops, and a good amount comes from overseas. Try growing corn or wheat without it.
Not long ago cheap natural gas was driving ag production and farm income via fertilizer cost reductions. Biden has ruined all this.
“Like fuel, why an increase in price since we don’t really buy any from Russia or Ukraine.”
Oil is fungible, that’s why.
Yeah, I hear you. Haven’t heard about the local farmers saying they are having a problem, fortunately. The stands aren’t open yet so we’ll hear more when that happens and the Farmer’s Market starts, etc. City Market was well stocked today, and I thought, “So far, so good.”
Farmers can go back to Manure , Politicians put out tons of it every hour
How about another viewpoint? Disruption of Ukraine “breadbasket” will increase prices earned by American farmers?
