Florida Dunkin’ Worker Sentenced to House Arrest for Fatally Punching Customer

Former Florida Dunkin’ manager Corey Pujos, 27, accused of fatally punching an elderly customer who called him the “‘n-word,” was given two years of house arrest as part of a plea deal.

Pujos will undergo three years of probation following house arrest, must attend an anger management course, and must complete 200 hours of community service. He was initially charged with aggravated manslaughter before cutting a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a felony battery charge in exchange for the sentence.

The incident occurred last year after 77-year-old Vonelle Cook went through the drive-thru at the Dunkin’ located at 410 South 50 Street in Tampa. Cook was irate about the service in the drive-thru, so he went inside the store and proceeded to spout off about customer service.

Prosecutors said he was verbally abusive and aggressive toward Dunkin’ workers. Pujos asked the 77-year-old to leave, which prompted Cook to call him the “n-word.”

“Pujols told Cook not to call him the racial slur again,” WTVT reports. “When Cook did, Pujols punched him in the jaw, knocking the man out and causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor.”

He started bleeding from the head and was taken to a hospital with a skull fracture and contusions on the brain. He died three days later.

Grayson Kamm, a spokesman for the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office provided WTVT with a statement on Pujos’s sentence:

This outcome holds the defendant accountable while taking into account the totality of the circumstances—the aggressive approach and despicable racial slur used by the victim, along with the defendant’s age, lack of criminal record, and lack of intent to cause the victim’s death.

Imagine if you could change this story to just reverse the races of the two men.

Everthing else the same, well, maybe change the N word to “racist honky”.

Same sentence?

In some states, the Karen’s provocation would qualify to make the charge voluntary manslaughter, not murder.

Also, the Karen was Karening. Maybe she didn’t deserve to die, but she was provoking people and she certainly deserved *something*.

. . . along with the defendant's age . . .

What about the victim's age--at 77 he was nearly as old as Joe 'sh!ts himself' Biden--also known for hurling racial insults--what if someone were to punch Joey baby in the face for being racially insensitive?

“along with the defendant’s age,”

He was 27. Why did this get him a reduced sentence?

Discussed here yesterday. The guy who got punched was convicted of sexually preying on young boys.

One less scumbag on the planet thanks to an unlikely hero.

Sorry, the victim was male, so adjust pronouns accordingly. However - male Karen was still Karening.

“Seems awfully low for murder.”

Well, the victim did use the N word which, in today’s America is a capital offense. I’m surprised the perp didn’t get some kind of award.

I learned early in life that you don’t say that to a black guy unless you’re prepared for a fight.

I am failing to see the problem if a provoked party were to punch Biden in the face.

Unless you’re black. If the word were truly as triggering as they claim, such a thing would not be the case.

“When Cook did, Pujols punched him in the jaw, knocking the man out and causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor.”

This mitigating circumstance is not an excuse for the use of violence. It’s one thing to prohibit the use of a word in society. But to write it into case law as a license to murder is a terrible precedent.

Aggravated manslaughter was the original charge. It got downgraded to felony battery. And the battery charge was likely felony rather than a misdemeanor because the victim was over 65 years old.

It looks like Justice is Woketard in Tampa.

It’s ok because he used a bad word and hurt a black man’s feelings... that’s the new standards in USSA

Sorry, I deal in reality. But go ahead and call every black you meet that because they say it to each other. Let me know how it works out.
