The conventional wisdom in Washington usually lag the view from the field by two to four weeks. Analysts and commentators have grudgingly declared that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been blocked, and that the war is stalemated. The more likely truth is that the Ukrainians are winning. Most professional scholars of the Russian military first predicted a quick and decisive Russian victory; then argued that the Russians would pause, learn from their mistakes, and regroup; then concluded that the Russians would actually have performed much better if they had followed their doctrine; and now tend to mutter that everything can change, that the war is not over, and that the weight of numbers still favors Russia. Their analytic failure will be only one of the elements of this war worth studying in the future. ost professional scholars of the Russian military first predicted a quick and decisive Russian victory; then argued that the Russians would pause, learn from their mistakes, and regroup; then concluded that the Russians would actually have performed much better if they had followed their doctrine; and now tend to mutter that everything can change, that the war is not over, and that the weight of numbers still favors Russia. The Ukrainians are not merely defending their strong points in urban areas but maneuvering from and between them, following the Clausewitzian dictum that the best defense is a shield of well-directed blows. The West’s biggest obstacle to accepting success, though, is that we have become accustomed over the past 20 years to think of our side as being stymied, ineffective, or incompetent. It is time to get beyond that, and consider the facts that we can see.

We simply don’t know who is winning or losing.
We know Russia has an advantage in men and materials. We also know that they have no qualms about just shelling the cities to dust.
The rest is speculation.
How long before they take Moscow?
The Atlantic? Prior to 28 days ago, when was the last time you believed anything published by these hacks?
More propaganda, Ukraine is not winning and will not do so. More fantasy from the MSM to justify sending more arms and widening the war.
Not our circus, not our monkeys.
Detachment Steiner is about to conduct a counterattack!
People have been saying that Ukraine will inevitably lose, no matter how long it takes for the Russians to destroy people and infrastructure and private properties.
But, it’s also true that, inevitably, Russia will run out of armaments and equipment and military personnel. The longer the war lasts, the less that Russia will have with which to conduct war. And that’s especially true after the sanctions which are stifling their economy, and as we all know, military power is dependent upon a strong economy.
Ukraine is losing a lot, but Russia is losing a lot more, including their standing as a first rate military power.
Pro-Putin conspiracy nuts here on FR think any news of Ukrainian success is Jewish left-wing propaganda by the Ukrainian comedian and neo-con Deep staters. It’s all about new world order Reptilians taking over and enslaving all white men and the eventuality of a Black\Gay hegemony, thus taking their F-150 payments and yearly visits to the Outer Banks every year away and making their plump wives as sex slaves for the mud people
Never.
The Russians will defend Mother Russia to their last breath.
In case Russia is attacked, the Russians will change and all will volunteer to defend it. Everybody will stand with Putin!
I think, Zelensky knows it.
Agree. It's not winning when your house is destroyed and the enemy is comfortable at home. Even if Russia withdraws, Ukraine is destroyed. Russia won't withdraw without keeping more territory. The Ukrainians are losing. When they can mount an offensive on Russian lands, then maybe they can lay claim to turning the war around.
I see Russian military in Ukraine.
I don’t see Ukrainian military in Russia.
Th Ukrainians have done very well--and they have won a bunch of tactical victories. They are close to a stalemate.
On one level, a stalemate looks like a win for Ukraine. But how does Ukraine get the lost ground back?

...especially when you look at the author’s previous articles. I don’t know exactly what is happening in the Ukraine, but this author’s biases make me suspicious of this article.
The Atlantic talked about Trump’s gear during the election and publishes lots of lies. They are at the far left of the far left.

You are one sick guy.
I don’t think they are reptiles. And our wives aren’t fat.
The Atlantic has a bad track record for accuracy on any politicized subject. They were the ones pushing the debunked story of Trump dissing soldiers in private from an anonymous source. Maybe this story happens to be true, but I give the Atalintic as much epistemic weight as a broken clock.
Are they?
