Even now Hope is considered the best female goalkeeper to play the game. She was the shutout Queen.
I don’t know if any justification was given for benching her, but her replacement allowed four goals. I hadn’t known her replacement was black. Wow. Give up a championship just to virtue signal.

I can see that viewpoint. For one thing more likely to actually be able to shoot a basket rather than jump and guard the ball all the way to the basket. Yeah, I’m not real impressed by monkeys hanging on the basket that’s too short for them.

She was better than Briana Scurry who started, in no small part because she was black. We lost. Hope had started all the games before that and we were undefeated. Hope spoke out, and was punished by the USWNT by being banished.
I remember that! My wife and I were fans of the USWNT...back then.
