“They say it is healthier to have individual-interest groups scattered throughout US society. (Like a salad).”
This is considered the alternative to the ‘melting pot’ idea. I believe Canada prides itself on its salad approach.
“While tolerating Open Borders, we can expect more home invasions...”
If you’ve ever spent time in Latin America, their homes are specifically built to resist home invasions, have been for centuries. Our style of homes look like easy pickings to them.

Nun and Police outfits were unavailable.
It was either Mechanic, or Hairdresser, or Nurse.
The deceased chose poorly.

"The story is a little garbled<"
Actually, it does pretty well follow the rule of thumb, "what where when why how." I assume the criminal had broken down the door and was in the process off climbing over it or pushing it aside when he was shot.

What a fouled up article. The author can’t even get verb tenses straight.

If you drove around Miami in the 60s, every home with bars on the windows belonged to a Cuban family. Sadly, there was no escape if fire consumed their homes.
In the forty years I lived there, I depended on open windows for Miami’s abundant breezes. Most today are 100% dependant on air conditioning.
Today, new windows are tiny or raised substantially above the ground. New residential architecture has the look many Miamians describe as “Dental Office”.
Even “peaceful” southern Spain had anti-break-in measures that would leave you aghast.
