Incandescent light bulbs being phased out to save energy

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is scrapping old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs, speeding an ongoing trend toward more efficient lighting that officials say will save households, schools and businesses billions of dollars a year.

Rules finalized by the Energy Department will require manufacturers to sell energy-efficient light bulbs, accelerating a longtime industry practice to use compact fluorescent and LED bulbs that last 25 to 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs. The Trump administration had slowed an earlier phaseout of incandescents, saying it was targeting rules that burden businesses.

Once the new rules are fully in place next year, consumers should save nearly $3 billion per year on their utility bills, the Energy Department said. The rules are projected to cut planet-warming carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next 30 years, an amount equivalent to emissions generated by 28 million homes in one year, officials said.

The new rules expand energy-efficiency requirements to more types of light bulbs and ban sale of bulbs that produce less than 45 lumens per watt — a measure of how much light is emitted for each unit of electricity.

The Trump administration in 2019 had slowed a years-long push by Congress and past administrations to switch Americans to LED bulbs and other lighting that uses less electricity. Former President Donald Trump said in September 2019 that the Energy Department canceled a pending phaseout of incandescent bulbs because “what’s saved is not worth it.”

LEDs used to be pretty crappy until about 4 years ago. Now they last longer and are brighter and produce a lot less heat. They have to charge more because of the lower volume of sales needed, but they sure are a lot better overall just from those reasons.

Yep. Only the executive and legislative branch together can create laws. And if it’s not a law you can do it. It’s up to the judicial Branch to decide if those laws are constitutional and that’s about it. The whole concept of rules is a very slippery slope situation. It’s used to create traffic rules and other rules that relate to any activity that requires some sort of a license or permit.

Unfortunately, we live in a very Soviet like world where virtually everything you do require some sort of a license or permit. And that’s how they get away with trying to enforce “rules”.

Dimmer switches that work with the new stuff are 3 times the price.

Not just light bulbs. Also toilets, shower heads, and I’m sure I could think of a few others if I thought hard enough. There was a story a few years ago about a guy that got past the shower head rule by having a splitter on a shower head that allowed him to use three shower heads from the same water outlet. I don’t know how that case ever ended up though. Typically they can’t control what the end user does with those things. They can only control what the manufacturer is create. You can pretty much make anything you want as long as it’s not going to blow up your neighborhood.

“...and LED bulbs that last 25 to 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs.”

Not if you purchased cheap-assed Chinese crap sold by Amazon - as I did.

Not even a year and a half years old, and 40% death rate. Avoid at all costs.

Agreed on LED lights being much better than they used to be. And I like mine. But I also like incandescent bulbs for some purposes. Most notably dimming lights.

None of the governments business. I love LED lights. All of our lights are LED. My Christmas tree lights have been LED for more than 15 years. As much as I like them, it is not the government’s role to ban products and force the use of preferred products. The market place is how products are chosen. Free people get to chose which they prefer by purchasing what they like. Buying only what the government allows you to have, those people are called serfs.

I have so many 40 and 60 watt incandescent bulbs stored up I’ll be long gone before I run out.

I’ll have to check where the LED bulbs I bought at Home Depot were made, but so far, a few of the ones used regularly haven’t lasted any longer than the incandescent bulbs. Meh.

I did the same thing when we first heard about all of this years ago. But I’ve got a lot of 100s, too :-)

What a pain the ass. I still have a few 100 Watt bulbs left over from the last time the government said it would ban these — that was Obambi, back then.

Meanwhile, Obama/Biden is back to messing around with fleet EPA mileage, trying to outlaw the internal combustion engine.

I’ve yet to see an LED bulb last as long as an incandescent. It seems to me that I’m changing them more often than an incandescent.

Incandescent lightbulbs are quite handy. They keep my pet birds warm, which keeps them from getting sick.
