~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina

The 4th Fighter Wing is the host unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and accomplishes its training and operational missions with F-15E Strike Eagles. Two of the wing’s four fighter squadrons are operational units, capable of deploying worldwide on short notice and immediately generating combat power.

The other two squadrons are responsible for training all F-15E aircrews for the Air Force. The 916th Air Refueling Wing, a tenant unit at Seymour, is an Air Force Reserve Command Wing under the Air Mobility Command. It is assigned 10 KC-135R Stratotankers.

Throughout the 2000s until 2021, Seymour Johnson continued to support operations in Afghanistan and Iraq during OEF, OIF, and later Operation Inherent Resolve. In 2010 another Air Force Reserve unit, the 414th Fighter Group arrived at Seymour Johnson to help train aircrews and assist in maintaining the F-15 aircraft.

In 2021, base personnel from Seymour Johnson went to Holloman AFB, New Mexico, in support of Operation Allies Welcome, to provide a home for Afghan refugees. Today, Seymour Johnson continues to train and fly the F-15E and remains a premier air defense base for the United States.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter designed to perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. An array of avionics and electronics systems gives the F-15E the capability to fight at low altitude, day or night, and in all weather.

The aircraft uses two crew members, a pilot and a weapon systems officer. Previous models of the F-15 are assigned air-to-air roles; the "E" model is a dual-role fighter. It has the capability to fight its way to a target over long ranges, destroy enemy ground positions and fight its way out.

NCseymourjohnson4

The F-15's superior maneuverability and acceleration are achieved through its high engine thrust-to-weight ratio and low-wing loading. It was the first U.S. operational aircraft whose engines' thrust exceeded the plane's loaded weight, permitting it to accelerate even while in vertical climb. Low-wing loading (the ratio of aircraft weight to its wing area) is a vital factor in maneuverability and, combined with the high thrust-to-weight ratio, enables the aircraft to turn tightly without losing airspeed.

Engraved Grief
Read: Job 19:19–27

Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, . . . inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever! Job 19:23–24

After receiving the devastating diagnosis of a rare and incurable brain cancer, Caroline found renewed hope and purpose through providing a unique service: volunteering photography services for critically ill children and their families. Through this service, families could capture the precious moments shared with their children, both in grief and “the moments of grace and beauty we assume don’t exist in those desperate places.” She observed that “in the hardest moments imaginable, those families . . . choose to love, despite and because of it all.”

There’s something unspeakably powerful about capturing the truth of grief—both the devastating reality of it and the ways in which we experience beauty and hope in the midst of it.

Much of the book of Job is like a photograph of grief—capturing honestly Job’s journey through devastating loss (1:18–19). After sitting with Job for several days, his friends wearied of his grief, resorting to minimizing it or explaining it away as God’s judgment. But Job would have none of it, insisting that what he was going through mattered, and wishing that the testimony of his experience would be “engraved in rock forever!” (19:24).

Through the book of Job, it was “engraved”—in a way that points us in our grief to the living God (vv. 26–27), who meets us in our pain, carrying us through death into resurrection life.Monica La Rose

How can facing pain honestly bring healing? When have you experienced unexpected grace and beauty within great grief?

Compassionate God, help me to witness honestly to those who are experiencing pain and offer the hope You provide.

Howdy, lauren. *HUGZ*

Enjoying the break from storms?
It does mean baking in the heat though. Dang it.
We’re in the same boat here this week so you aren’t alone. LOL

Last month I saw some of their fighters buzzing across I-795 north of Goldsboro. Couldn’t have been any higher than 1000 ft. Crazy fast!

Howdy, luvie.

We have a lot of military bases and it’s hard to keep up with all of them, isn’t it? LOL
Seymour Johnson is one I know about because I drove past it when I went to the beach from Raleigh years ago. When I was lucky, I’d get to see a jet or two flying when I drove through the area.

How was your day, other than hot?

Today was beautiful with bright sunshine.
I worked on my truck outside in it to absorb Vit D

The warm weather really helps keep the pain down
so I will take advantage of it all,
BUT, I will not overdue it. I don’t need to damage it.

Hey, sorry it took so long to get here. I am watching a movie and got caught up in it.

Hot was about all I have to say about the day. Oh, and dry. Humidity down to 6% this afternoon. Ever feel the moisture just being sucked out of your pores? That’s how it feels. And the rain they promised tomorrow. Non-starter. Bah!

Hope you had a pretty day. And if you had rain, I’m gonna be so jealous. LOL! Did you say that today was when you needed to go get that doc to fix your eye script?
