Like I have said before, if something like this is going to happen at all, then it should happen in NYC or some other Deep Blue Place. That is the only kind of thing that has a chance of waking these people up, outside of a major depression, or an asteroid strike, or huge super-volcano, or nuclear war, or a fatal pestilence.
