Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to Serbia has been cancelled after countries around Serbia closed their airspace to his aircraft, a senior foreign ministry source told the Interfax news agency on Sunday.

The source confirmed a Serbian media report that said Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro had closed their airspace to the plane that would have carried Moscow's top diplomat to Belgrade on Monday.

"Our diplomacy has yet to master teleportation," the source said.

Must say, if the Russians do decide to nuke Europe, it will be well deserved.

Right. Because not wanting an aggressive, threatening country to overfly your sovereign borders is an act of war justifying nuclear annihilation.

Gee, and the Russians wonder why they're not well-liked by most of the nations of the former Soviet bloc....

Never a good idea to deny your very nasty large neighbor small things like diplomatic plane passage. The Russians won’t forget this intentional slight. It’s like a six year old saying no because the sixteen year old boyfriend of his older sister is with him. Unfortunately the boyfriend will be dating someone else soon, and the six year old will get the crap beat out of him. If the sanctions cover diplomats, then the EU better start sending the Russians home. And the UN delegation needs to leave New York.

You probably would have been happier if they shot down his plane.

Actually, none of the countries that refused overflight rights are direct neighbors of Russia. In fact, they all have at least two countries between them and Russia.

The Russians won’t forget this intentional slight. It’s like a six year old saying no because the sixteen year old boyfriend of his older sister is with him. Unfortunately the boyfriend will be dating someone else soon, and the six year old will get the crap beat out of him.

Actually, this particular six year old is one of 30 brothers, several of them quite large, and all committed to defending even their smallest siblings from any bullies. So I don't think they're too worried.

Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Montenegro- all dutiful little NATO lackeys. Which is why the Russians rather meekly acquiesced.

If you’ve followed Sergey Lavrov’s career, he is anything but meek. Measured, definitely. Patient, yes.

His personality is irrelevant. What matters is the reality of the power dynamics between NATO and Russia. And in that regard...Russia has no options.

neighbors two doors down... and you really believe that the EU or the USA will engage in a direct conflict with Russia when since WW2 with the exception of the Cuban missile crisis our whole foreign policy is based on avoiding a direct conflict with the largest holder of nuclear weapons on the planet.
