Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig to launch write-in campaign for Michigan governor Paul Egan, Detroit Free Press Fri, June 10, 2022
Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, whose nominating petition for governor was rejected by state officials because of too many fraudulent signatures, announced Thursday he will launch a write-in campaign for the Republican nomination.
"I'm going to run as a write-in," Craig said Thursday night on "Let it Rip" on Fox 2 Detroit. "I'm going to be the next governor."
Craig, who retired after eight years as chief in Detroit in June 2021, said he made the decision based on many appeals he has received from his supporters, telling him not to abandon his campaign.
"I'm not going to roll over," Craig said. "This is not about me as a candidate, this is about the voters of Michigan." Borrowing a line from former President Donald Trump, he added: "We want to clean out the swamp."
Once the acknowledged front-runner of a crowded Republican field for the Aug. 2 primary, Craig's campaign suffered several missteps, including a lack of availability to news media, spending more money than it was taking in, and changes in top campaign staffing.
In a May 23 report, the Michigan Bureau of Elections said Craig's nominating petition contained thousands of forged signatures, including signatures of voters who had died and ones who no longer lived at the addresses listed. Of the 21,205 signatures Craig submitted, only 10,192 appear to be valid, according to the report. State law requires 15,000 valid signatures.
The Michigan Board of State Canvassers later left Craig off the ballot by deadlocking 2-2 and Michigan courts upheld his disqualification.
Political experts say mounting a statewide write-in campaign is far more challenging than organizing a successful nominating petition drive.

BS
He has an easily remembered name and may be able to leverage publicity from the way he was shafted off the ballot. Those give him a chance. He needs to runner a smoother campaign than the article claims he’d been running to show he’s worth the effort of writing him in to pull it off.
Garrett Soldano is a much more consistant candidate for governer, more popular outside of the detroit area.
“Detroit Free Press” is the local equivalent of CNN.
Craig was the police chief that oversaw the TCF Center debacle.
Now you’re up to speed…
There is a trend now of people getting kicked off the GOP primary ballot now, some at the GOP leadership’s request.
Good police chief. Governor. Not a chance. None of them do.
How is it possible that he was unable to get the right number of valid signatures? Why were a large majority forged?
Hired a fraud canvessing company. The whole signature situation looks like bunch of amateurs got played by an old trick.
Right now the witch is going to win. So, there is no harm in Craig’s effort.
If the other Republican candidates can do what is right and stand down, Craig might win.
If the other candidates do what is expected and don’t step down Craig probably won’t win.
But if Craig pushes on, (remember she has already won) he can bring lots of angry voters (some Black) to the polls who will vote Republican and Craig’s “losing effort” can destroy down ballot rodents and a few congressional rodents as well.
Craig’s move is a good thing.
Because of the current situation he, and Michigan Republicans have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Craig is Black, he has sway with Blacks. Craig is a cop. He has law and order sway.
He’ll just divide the vote and allow the democrat to win. How much is Whitless paying him?
Idiots will re-elect Shiny ShoeBox Face who wouldn’t allow PLANTS and SEEDS to be sold during COVID!!
He is running as a write in to be the Republican nominee.
Ah, well in that case I support his effort. I’ve seen him on a few shows. He seems like a solid no nonsense kind of guy.
