Yellowstone closed for first time in 34 years amid flooding, mudslides

CODY, Wyo., June 13 (Reuters) - Record flooding and rockslides unleashed by an unprecedented burst of heavy rains prompted the rare closure on Monday of all five entrances to Yellowstone National Park at the start of the summer tourist season, the park superintendent said.

The entire park, spanning parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, will remain closed to visitors, including those with lodging and camping reservations, at least through Wednesday, as officials inspect damage to roads, bridges and other facilities.

The closures come as Yellowstone was gearing up to celebrate its 150th anniversary year, and as local communities heavily dependent on tourism were counting on a rebound following COVID-19 travel restrictions over the past two summers.

All five park entrances were closed to inbound traffic for the first summer since a series of devastating wildfires in 1988. The National Park Service said it was working to evacuate visitors and staff remaining at various locations, especially in the hardest-hit northern flank of Yellowstone.

That’s a lot of damage. The power of nature is amazing.

Lot of washed out roads and collapsed bridges. There really is a safety hazard here, not an over-reach.

Gardiner, Montana, is just outside the north entrance to Yellowstone. All the businesses in that small town are the biggest price gougers you’ll ever find. I hope they all suffer great financial loss from this closure of Yellowstone National Park. They deserve it. The locals won’t even allow any fast food chain restaurants. The town name should be changed to Greed, Montana.

In the natural order of things, elimination of the beavers that once populated Yellowstone, and their inherent water management skills, is largely responsible for this. The “high-minded” wildlife management people have fought continually to keep them from being re-introduced, going so far as to claim that beavers were never indigenous to the area, which is hogwash.

It’s all Trump’s fault. He withdrew from the Paris Accord, so now nature is POd! Don’t be surprised if there are a few volcanic eruptions.

Its wasn't 34 years since the last shutdown.

The park (and all national parks) were closed during the Obama Admin as leverage/revenge for the gov shutdown.

Well, I’ve always said that global warming would be good, because a warmer Earth is a wetter Earth. I was just hoping it would show up in the desert. 🤣

We’re getting the heavy rains now in southern Alberta

what a lousy spring - cold, cloudy, the number of days so far where the temp has been above 70 degrees I can count on 1 hand ...

but, remember the looming threat of Global Warming!! We’re all gonna burn up!!!

right ....

First time ever it’s rained that much at Yellowstone in millions of years. Mother nature will kick your butt at some point as a reminder that humans are a pimple on her butt. Gina McCarthy was right about glow bull warming I suppose. Hope everyone is okay.

Gardiner is apparently also where all of the supplies to run the park are staged from. With the road into the park south of Gardiner washed out, that’s going to make it difficult to support tourist activity in the park this summer.

And West Yellowstone. There’s like a $25 tax per day city tax for rooms. We stayed further south in Idaho on the way in and saved a bundle.

However the greatest drive in the USA is from the northeast Yellowstone exit down the Chief Joseph Hwy to Cody. It’s the most beautiful drive I’ve ever been on. It’s worth the trip to the park just for that drive.

That’s probably not good to clog up all those vents on a mega-volcano that is overdue

Not a national security issue, but a pretty big deal for umpteen thousands of travelers. I bet you will see makeshift campgrounds pop up.

All I see are efforts to reestablish beaver colonies.
