Hit that dam 100 ft below the water level, then the massive water release will destroy much more of it.

How about missile attacks on upstream lesser dams? The Three Gorges Dam can barely contain water from upstream, and will buckle under a little more stress.

Next would be a headwaters dam, which would start a domino effect, taking out other dams downriver.

Beat me to it. All they need to do is take out lesser dams upstream to begin the domino effect to take out Three Gorges Dam.

Right you are. Especially if it a very rainy season for three gorges and the dams upstream. Like it was 2 and 3 years ago.

I’ve been saying the same thing for years about the Baltic States. Arm the Balts and Estonians and Russia will never invade.

Three Gorges produces 11% of China’s electricity.

It happened in Soviet Georgia, resulting in 5 dam collapses. It had no warnings, and they reported a laughably small number of casualties, which was par for the course in Soviet era disasters.

Or as someone observed at the time, “Russia has no disasters but the very worst.”

Similar to our socialist government in California. In early 2017 the Oroville dam partially collapsed and flooded areas downstream. Owned by California Department of Water Resources. Engineers complained for years that it needed repairs (2002, 2005, 2014 etc.), and money was finally set aside for repairs. But governors diverted money away for other pet projects (Newsome) and the dam failed causing a disaster. "Nothing to see here!". I wonder if anyone told Newsome that the state capital Sacramento lies in a flood plain downstream from dams.

The book, “Uncovering Soviet Disasters: Exploring the Limits of Glasnost”, by James E. Oberg, covers about 250 Soviet disasters of all kinds and is both fascinating and horrifying.

In many cases it’s like somebody collected hundreds of what high school kids though were great ideas, then put them into effect at a huge scale without any further examination or contemplation, then disregarded what happened when they blew up.

Other than sterilizing major rivers with nitrate fertilizer, the Ural Mountain disaster perhaps leads the pack.

“Nuclear Disaster in the Urals” by Zhores Medvedev.

If you read these, be sure to have a bottle of whiskey handy, to fend off any acute existential crises.

Those dams are an hour or more flight time from Taiwan. Those missiles don't have a chance of making it.
