Hackers Crash Internet as 'Russian Davos' Adjusts to New Reality
US News ^ | 6/17/2022 | Reuters

Hackers on Friday delayed the start of President Vladimir Putin's speech to Russia's flagship economic forum, shorn of strong Western participation as Russia adjusts to the "new reality" of life under Western sanctions.

-snip-

But the Western investors and investment bankers who had turned up in previous years were conspicuously absent.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said a denial of service attack, which works by flooding servers with bogus traffic, had struck the forum's accreditation and admission systems.

Internet connectivity and speeds suffered at the forum, and Putin's speech, in which he accused the West of trying to crush his country with an economic "blitzkrieg", was delayed by a little over 100 minutes.

Western sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine combined with related supply chain issues have starkly altered Russia's export-import dynamics, with the country now looking to the likes of China and India and turning away from the West.

Key banks have lost access to the global payments system SWIFT, Western brands are shunning the country and selling up in a hurry, writing off billions of dollars in assets - and the European Union has promised an embargo on Russian oil.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko lamented Russia's backwardness in technology, and said the "painful process" of Russia switching to its own technology was under way.

"You are competing with global companies that have overtaken you by whole generations," he told an audience of Russian business representatives.

The CEO of Russia's top lender Sberbank summed up the situation with grim irony.

"They say all is well with business in Russia, there are just small problems: there is no one to buy from and no one to sell too, it's impossible to pay and impossible to supply," German Gref said on Friday.

Mark my words, you heard it here first, folks: As soon as Putin dies or is otherwise removed from power, all of the Western corporations will be right back in Russia doing business as usual, and Europe will turn on the Natural Gas Pipelines from Mother Russia once again.

More bonus video of Putin’s train wreck today:

In StPetersburg, Russia, Kazakhstan’s president Tokayev refused to recognise Russian colonial entities in eastern Ukraine - DPR and LPR - as independent states.

Tokayev said that Kazakhstan doesn’t recognize “LPR” and “DPR” and called them quasi-state territories

He did this with Putin in the audience.

Doesn’t that depend on who succeeds Pootie? He just one hardliner in a collection of hardliners - all of whom want to restore the old Russian Empire (not Soviet Union). All the moderates are gone. Restoration means taking the Baltic States and Poland.

The next Russian presidential election is in March of 2024, so that’s less than two years away. Putin said he is not running. Probably because his health is going downhill, he doesn’t look well.

Remember that Taliban guys were the guests of honor there.

Russia is really picking from the bottom of the barrel when it comes to prestige visitors.

Maybe I am too optimistic, but I think about it like that. Whatever the evil f**k who follows Putin wants he is not as secure in power as Putin is (at least in the beginning).

He has to listen to other interest groups a bit more and the business groups are going to say how they’re starving.

When Putin dies or is removed, you will likely get a stone-hearted leader who makes you wish for the warm days of Putin who could be reasoned with.
It will be some guy who is fully and correctly sure that the west is hostile unless they can control Russian resources and money.

It probably won’t be another Russian WEF kid with Ivy or London connections.

Just womanly rumors.

Here is the stock market chart for the past month.

It's moving, but no one is dying and no one is blooming.
