LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - Phillip Perry called a flood control tunnel home for three years. While helping some other homeless people at a wash at Boulder Highway this week, he told FOX5 about some close calls of when he got caught in rushing water while in a tunnel.

“I’ve actually had to spend two to three hours just on the ladder because it came that quick,” said Perry.

Perry said he escaped rising tunnel waters by climbing ladders that lead to manhole covers

The last Jason Bourne movie featured a closing fight scene in the Las Vegas flood control tunnels - although it is possible it was not actually filmed in Las Vegas.

I agree. My wife and I used to volunteer at the homeless shelter in our old town. Sadly, 90% of the single homeless were mentally deficient or strung out on drugs.

The families wanted and needed help, but most often were too embarrassed to admit they were in their current situation. Too often, we had to go looking for their family unit because they didn’t think they would get help if they came in as a whole.

Since moving, a local church we frequent often has homeless help days where everyone brings blankets, coats, toys, etc. to give away...we did that two Christmas days ago and are planning to help again this year. I learned a lesson...suitcases are the most popular item...so they can transport their meager belongings. We have been buying roller suitcases off and on all year...I think we have 20 to give away this year.

Re: many municipalities hand out apartments practically for free

Not in Seattle.

It takes three years just to get on the Wait List for a one person subsidized studio apartment.

Homeless women and children used to be first listed, but since fluid gender and age definitions arrived, that may have changed, too.

Great on you and the wife for working with them. My daughter and granddaughter worked with the local homeless here through the church. There are enough that are mentally unstable that the pastor told them to never go into the homeless camps without him and the entire group.

Block off the entrances to the flood control tunnels.

And the monsoons are not over, to be followed by record snowfall in the Rockies. La Niña.

Lake Meade water level is what, 220 feet below what the maximum level was in 1984? I’d say you have a ways to go.

Did I say that? I thought I said that living underground would be a good alternative to the heat.

Compassion is one thing.

Enabling or excusing is another.

If I felt sorry for everyone who made bad life choices, I’d be an emotional train wreck. Sometimes tough love is required, which is also a great teacher. Too many people make bad life choices and expect others to bail them out.

I absolutely feel for people who have had bad things happen to them beyond their control. But people who make bad life choices, well they are adults and it’s their decisions. I’m not going to lose any sleep over them.
