Europe faced the prospect of a radiation disaster on Thursday when a Russian-occupied nuclear plant was disconnected from Ukraine's power grid, President Volodomyr Zelensky has said.
It was only due to back-up electricity kicking in that the Zaporizhzhia plant was able to operate safely, he added.
Fires had earlier damaged overhead power lines, cutting the plant off.
There is growing concern over fighting near the complex, which is the largest nuclear plant in Europe.
"If the diesel generators hadn't turned on, if the automation and our staff of the plant had not reacted after the blackout, then we would already be forced to overcome the consequences of the radiation accident," President Zelensky warned on Thursday night.
The damage was caused by fires which Ukraine's state nuclear agency said had interfered with power lines connecting the plant on Thursday, temporarily cutting Zaporizhzhia off from the national grid for the first time in its history.
"As a result, the station's two working power units were disconnected from the network," Kyiv officials said.
The state nuclear company said work was under way on Friday to try to reconnect the reactors to the grid. Zaporizhzhia's other four reactors have been out of action for most of the war.
Satellite images taken on Wednesday showed an extensive fire burning in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear complex.

Apparently it was a detailed plan drawn up by Russia to disconnect Europe’s largest nuclear plant from Ukraine’s power grid.
Also known was the plant’s electricity connections are already in a critical situation, with three of the four main lines connecting it to Ukraine’s grid broken during the war, and two of the three back-up lines connecting it to a conventional power plant also down.
Additionally...During a shift between grid systems, the plant would be reliant on a back-up diesel-powered generator which apparently worked as intended. Followed by the UN’s nuclear watchdog at the plant by the end of the month to check on security .

Shelling from the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant results in fires, disconnecting the plant from the Ukrainian power grid multiple times, causing concerns of cooling systems failing, which would result in the core overheating and a nuclear catastrophe that will cripple Eurasia and kill tens of thousands of civilians.
Russia have since restored power to the grid and the core is stable, but Russia warns that if the Ukrainian Forces don’t stop provoking the plant, there will be nothing Russia can do to stop the cooling systems from failing.
Even NATO countries are starting to admit this reality cannot be ignored, resulting in the French Minister of Defense reaching out to Russian Minister of Defense to discuss the ongoing situation at the Zaporizhzhia Plant. There has been no reporting on the contents of the phone call, but it’s most certainly abnormal for French MIL to be negotiating with Russia.
This phone call could be a turning point for NATO countries to begin turning on Ukraine and the US. As the MSM are reporting that the crisis is being caused by shelling from Ukrainian Forces. Even CNN had to admit it. They say “fires” caused the disconnect in the title, but have to admit in the article that Ukrainian shelling is causing a potential Chernobyl-like catastrophe.
The Western media are doing their best to spin it, but it’s proving ineffective. NATO countries are starting to see that Ukraine and their US handlers are the ones putting the world at risk.
This Zaporizhzhia event will add further legitimacy to the rest of the Russian allegations against the Kiev and Biden regimes, soon to be featured in upcoming military tribunals.
The world have already begun turning their back on the US as the evidence in Ukraine continues to come out. Eventually, the US will stand alone, and all those responsible for the crimes against humanity will be held accountable.

Their attacks took out 3 of the 4 powerlines connecting this plant to the Uke national grid …forcing 1 of the 2 working generators to be put into cold shutdown, and the other able to provide only limited power, now going only to local communities

What is fascinating about the news and opinion from both sides is that this "special military operation" remains no full-scale war. Be for Ukraine, for Russia or neutral, a war would simply cut power to the enemy as best the aggressor could make it so. Fro either side.
Comrade Putin or comrade Zelensky, it is assured that continuing escalation and lack of negotiation -- the Minsk failed, did it not? -- will come to the cut off of energy to some side in this.
Were I creating the strategy for Putin, the energy grid and Internet of course would have long ago been taken from Zelensky. And were I creating a strategy for Zelensky fighting against odds, I would be doing exactly as he is doing, which is to pose as saviour to the world and collector of huge sums of money.
Currently I remain in the "not my monkeys and not my circus" camp, as there are enough sitting in the cheap seats at the moment. War is highly profitable for the few, as always. And it is never highly profitable for the many, also as always.
What is certain is that we are not in charge, however this all turns out. But we are contributing to paying the bill. Bill, as in billions.

Zelensky knows this too, so radiation contamination would mostly affect his friends in Europe and countrymen in western Ukraine. Yet Z is doing the shelling and has told Ukrainians it is necessary,
Wait…the power plant was at risk because electricity running to it was turned off? I’m still on my first cup this morning, but this doesn’t make sense.
You need power to run the pumps circulating colling water through the reactors
If shut off the reactors would soon overheat and begin a meltdown
Normally you use some the electricity generated to run the pumps
There are backup diesel generators to provide the needed power
Even if reactors are shutdown still need colling water to deal with the decay heat of the radioactive elements in the core
Basically, the uranium is still reacting and heating the water to turn to steam to turn the turbines to generate electricity.
Without a channel to send the heat it stays in the chamber and continues to heat
It risks the uranium being turned into dirty bomb.
The Russians hold this nuclear plant and a great deal of the surrounding area. The artillery targeting the plant is coming from the UKRAINIAN side.
Ask yourself why the Ukrainian forces are trying to cause a melt down - could it be they see no chance of regaining that territory so they are scorching the earth? Salting the earth with radioactivity for a few hundred years will mean the Russians won’t get to enjoy the spoils. Also would make further attacks via the contaminated area dangerous.
Could they want to cause the catastrophe and blame Russia, to open up a few hundred billion more in “relief” funds (a.k.a. money laundering for the Deep State)?
